UK numbers now updated for Wednesday 29th April "Updated with figures reported on 29 April, including deaths in all settings, and updated notes on reporting of deaths figures. Figures for 30 April will follow later today"

Total confirmed cases 165,221 with 4,076 new. Total dead 26,097 (Includes all settings, not just hospitals now) with 765 new (note that's just new from that day, that's not the total number of deaths outside the hospital system):

The Current Status is bough to you by the World Wrestling Entertainment federation who have built Captain Tom Moore a championship belt:

The Status Outlook is bought to you by the US announcing one million cases. It's an outlook because... well... take a look at the Dr. Evil scene and see where that goes...

If you want to read it, the full report is here: (261 pages, but available free)

You're not actually that far from the mark there. There are tens or hundreds of billions of copies of the virus in each infected person. To eradicate a virus that way, they have to locate and capture each and every virion (an individual virus organism) and they are very very small. They also infect more than just humans, they also infect many other types of animals. We'd have to get them all, or it'll just start this process over again.

But like I said, you're not far from the mark, and that's why we need a vaccine. All of the chemical and medicinal (aka the mechanical way of virus irradication) treatments in the world can't guarantee that each and every active copy of the virus has been killed. That would be a very tall order. But if we can develop a vaccine, what it does is teach our immune system how to recognize and kill the virus. Then at least for a time your body has a defense it can use against it. And if it's temporary, vaccines are usually really cheap to replicate.
Yep as @Vavrik said we are starting to learn how to do this. In fact, some cancer treatments are being treated this way by gene splicing in code for the helper T cells to identify and treat the cancerous cells as foreign thus triggering the immune response. In the case of the Cov-19 its not necessarily the virus itself that is deadly but the immune system overreacting to the virus that causes inflammation of the lungs and septic shock. It's still not known why some individual's bodies react this way or what can be done to help and in fact, as this carries on there are reports that the information we thought we knew was in fact wrong. Like they now think Coronavirus is not only causing issues with the lungs but also impacting every major organ system in the body and as well as leading to blood clotting and strokes.

Since I was sick and tired of looking at states report of new cases, and trying to divine whether the number was increasing or decreasing (esp. with data entry being spotty on the weekends) I took the NYTimes data and added a trend line (7-day centered moving average, so for example, Wed would be averaged with the 3 days prior and 3 days after, so each day is the average of a week's data....should remove the weird lack of data entry on the weekends, I hope, so you can better discern the actual trend -- the only problem is, the most recent 3 days won't be shown, since it can't be averaged).

I'm pulling the data directly from the NYTimes data compilation, so it will get updated daily.

Next, I'll try to get up the data on countries...

Ok, I have the data up by country:

Awesome! The MA does wonders in cases where the numbers fluctuate greatly.
Thanks! It definitely helps "smooth" over (ha ha) the data entry weirdness we see, over the weekends and other issues...
Like, check out Georgia (below)...on April 12, they reported *fewer* total cases than the day before, so they had negative new cases...sheesh...

EDIT: I should have mentioned, the International / Country data comes from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control:

UK numbers have now been updated for today 30th April:

Total confirmed 171,253 with 6,032 new, total dead 26,771 (from all avenues not just Hospital data) with 674 new:

Chartorama30-04-20.jpg

Tests are ramping up in the wider community outside of hospitals so it's not surprising the chart is curving up a bit on the blue line.

The status contributions for today have been guest submitted by Mrs 'BobFace.

The current status is in reference to the news that a new anti-viral drug has a marked effect on the duration of the illness those infected with COVID-19 are experiencing, taking the duration from 15 days to 11. This was encapsulated by the lyrics "You'll need a magic weapon that'll never ever miss, it's dangerous to go alone, take this!" from the following music video:

The status outlook was encapsulated by a screenshot from another music video, an epic which envisioned the earth 4949 years in the future where all forms of human intamacy have been banned, which she suspects may well have been caused by this pandemic or one like it:

WHO says they used sound science to tell the world there was no issue with this virus (could not be transferred from human to human). While China stockpiled PPE and later they tried to sell to Italy and other countries at an inflated cost, 4-6 weeks passed before the WHO acknowledged it. Like saying, "Sorry I burned down your house, let me build you a new one for 3x the cost."

The whole world has the right to be upset.

1. They are totally incompetent.
2. They are politically motivated and corrupt.
3. They are incompetent, politically motivated, and corrupt. (All of the Above)

I vote for #3
TBH the world could/should have known that this virus is some serious issue when the Chinese started the Lockdown during/before the Chinese New Year. A lot of people seemed to not take this seriously or follow the common thinking process that this is some kind of flu. Granted, we don't know exactly how flu-patients' pulmonary CT-flindings look like, since they don't usually get that many scans, but there are patients who have recovered from the COVID for 4 weeks now. Their lungs look like shit. Personally I take Answer No. 2.

Seriously guys, if you can stay inside, stay inside. Our hospital is slowly switching to standard operation and the lockdown in Germany is slowly lifted. I think it's too early for it and I fear in 1-2 weeks we will see a sharp increase in cases. I hope I am wrong, because my antibody-test (and that of my colleagues) came back negative.
So yay, stay healthy everyone!

(And to add a suggestion to the daily updaters here: could weekly averages be more nice? Idk, holiday tomorrow => examined some sauvignon blanc tonite)

Great article about Germany's (and probably the world's) leading coronavirus expert that also gives details about the origins of the coronavirus and COVID-19:

Fascinating article. Germany is lucky to have Dr Drosten. It's interesting to note that Coronavirus has been around for awhile. SARS and MERS both belong to the Coronavirus family.

Wait, you just now grasped that Coronavirus has been around for a while and in fact, you have more than likely been infected by one of its members multiple times in your life? I thought it was well established by this thread and in the medical community that COV-19 is a new strain of SARS thus its name of SARS-CoV-2.

Fully aware of that. I've actually pointed that out in this very thread lol.

Just wanna reinforce that fact to preempt any talk about it being created in a lab, biological weapon, etc, etc.

Sweden was hated by the WHO and media, now they are the example. I love it when self righteous bureaucrats like the WHO have to eat crow. Vox you were WRONG
The Wapo articles are behind a paywall, what are they wrong about? I cant read it.

Also I dont thing the WHO, as an organization can "hate" a country. Same for media companies. Does NBC call in a few hundred employees and insist everybody in a giant meeting all hate a country?

Sweden Covid19 response is still very much up in the air. They have the highest cases AND deaths among the Nordic countries. Trump actually criticized Sweden for not locking down today. Interesting.

That's what they do to republicans every day.

Regardless, the world can be a dark place and we probably do not want to go there, my point or responsibility is to ask "what is the motivation? What is the motivation of WHO, what is the motivation of China, what is the motivation of Sweden, what is the motivation of Canada, etc. So the old adage is "follow the money", but China only pays a fraction of the WHO budget, so what else could be the WHOs motivation, "POWER", "CONTROL", "SUBVERSION", list goes on, but I suspect we will find out soon.

There is a world that expects submissiveness, and there is a world that expects freedom. WHO expects submissiveness, why they criticized Sweden so much because that socialist nation, bucked their propaganda campaign. Think about this, if everyone did the same thing how would you know it was wrong? ex. Everyone agrees 2+3 = 1... if everyone drones around saying it is "so". Then one person says 2+3=5 and they become a heretic. Idea here is that repressive bodies like the WHO want to be the only arbiter, dissenting ideas are frowned upon, thus making the population submissive. This is a turning point for the world, you can accept submissiveness, or you can question the motivations of every faction around the world and be liberated (free).

I think I may have missed some news item or article...

Sweden was hated by the WHO and media, now they are the example.
What is Sweden the example of?

Are you referring to the Swedish strategy of not locking down like other countries?

If so, their death rates are evidence that it was the wrong strategy.
