DEC 6 2021 WH Press Brief.

Psaki: "Should we send one to every American? "
Reporter: "maybe?"
Psaki: "Now what happens when every American has one? How much does that cost and what happens after that?"
Reporter: "All I know is that other countries seem to be making them available in greater quantities for less money".

DEC 21 2021.

To be fair, this is all a moving target. The need for testing depends a lot on whether people are a) getting vaccinated, b) following precautions, and c) whether the COVID flavor of the month is mutating further and spreading.

Add also, e) whether people are gathering for family get togethers, after i) not getting vaccinated and ii) not following precautions, etc.

Honestly, it is refreshing to see an administration reconsider a position based on emerging evidence, rather than repeatedly doubling down on "stupid."

809,268 American families disagree. At which point is it a more of a problem? 1M? 5M? 10M? Whats your magic number that would make you consider it a problem?
This is a great question and one I don't think is talked about enough as it's a very touchy subject. But the truth is there needs to be a number that is acceptable like there was an acceptable number of dying from influenza each year and we didn't think twice about it.

Actually Im lying, it is my problem if I need to go to the ER and the beds are full of antivax nutjobs struggling to breath.
This too is easily dealt with, so far my ICU doctor friends are questioning if any of the standard interventions like ventilators are even helpful or if it's just them doing their standard practice of throwing everything they can at attempting to save a life.

That's what ICU is for. As a patient, you go there and they throw whatever they can at you in an attempt to save your life. Sometimes nothing works so they make you as comfortable as possible as you die. That's a very difficult thing to watch, and they do this in ICU every day. I watched this first hand once, though I was in and out of consciousness myself, and have no idea of how long they worked to save that guy in the next room, but they worked hard, and didn't give up until there was nothing they could do but watch and comfort his passing.

The problem with COVID has been that the ICU has been getting full, and overflowing into the wards which makes it verry difficult to impossible to work to save all the lives that can be saved. They end up doing what amounts to wartime triage, this one gets a chance to live if he can, this one has less chance so must take his chances. And then, this one has a chance, but we have no place left.

As far as I'm concerned, every one of them deserves a medal and more than our thanks for what they've endured the past two years. Even the ones who gave everything, because it did cost some their lives, and others their careers.

The COVID ward at my Wife's hospital has stopped throwing patients on ventilators at the first opportunity. They'll only do it now when all other treatments have failed. We've learned quite a bit about how to treat COVID since it first emerged oh so very long ago.

Where I am we have been advised this week to test before going to a public socializing space. You just don't know if some one else in the room isn't able to be vaccinated or could take it back to a vulnerable person - as discovered a while back even the vaccinated can host a full viral load so reducing the ammount of transmission is about more than just being vaccinated.

In Liverpool public mass testing reduced hospitalisation by a third. It could be the difference between the peak of a wave being unpleasantly busy but managabe or an overwhelming disaster for the health services.

Admittedly the Delta varient had been allowed to go on a slow-burn once vaccination capped the death rate with about 50k cases a day, so when Omicron came along we saw cases nearly double in just 2 days... It feels like the message is finally getting throught to the bods on the top table that this doesn't go away just because the death rate went down and even if people aren't dying everyone getting sick at the same time hits the economy like a lockdown could have - now we have trains cancelled and public buildings in London unable to open due to sickness.

Mr. BobFace, as always I appreciate your diligence as TEST Squadrons leading COVID journalist.

I would like to make a request for Christmas day: Could you sort the positive headlines from the bad for us? I'd also like for you to put all the negative news behind a spoiler tag.

I was reading these headlines, and oof. Not very holly, nor jolly.

Mr NaffNaffBobFace is a respected Journalist and Gentlemen.

To only deliver Positive Headlines would amount to Propaganda!
I appreciate the kind words, I am naught but an aggregator there is no journalism going on here. The bad will still sit alongside the good, but for the Festive season a Spoiler to obscure the horrors of the day would be a holiday courtesy, and I don't want to be on Santas naughty list!

Then, you are doing as much or more "journalism" as most journalists. I mean how can they all have the same story with the same words or variations of the wording of the same stories. Blind luck? Not likely.

But in actual fact, Omicron does appear to be a massive Christmas gift (or whatever) to the world. Look at the charts showing hospitalizations and deaths. Almost everywhere they are dropping, even as cases rise to record levels. Much of the news about the pandemic is journalists searching for something, anything dramatic to say.

I’ve read several articles about Omicron being more infectious than Delta but less deadly. Hopefully this holds true and Covid burns itself out with this variant. Omicron has already supplanted Delta in many countries including the US.

You know what is possible, and maybe even likely. The versions of the common cold that usually infect huge numbers of us every year started as epidemics. That would probably have been 2 to 5 million years before modern humans even evolved. The longer time would be the most likely for Coronavirus variants, because almost all great apes can catch a Beta Corona Virus cold. That's the same family that COVID-19 comes from.
