Darn!
No cat ears?
Ah well, there WILL be cosmetics...
(The babarians got them, why shouldn't the desert dwellers.)

I have tried a couple of survival games, none of them kept me playing. Hoping this one work out. I guess the first couple of months will need a lot of bug fixing so I am still on the fence about buying in May or waiting a couple of patches.
Smart thing to do is not buy it on release and wait for a few patches, or even a xmas sale.

Unfortunately we are not smart.

So is this the hot new game we’re all piling in on only to put aside a couple of weeks down the road…haha? :glorious:

I think the last game you guys suckered me into was New World. I think I lasted a month there. Fun month though!

Love to hear about you guys experience that particular game.
Right now it kinda sounds like SC with basebuilding but minus any planet except for Daymar.
I did play Conan:Exiles (made by the same guys) to death. I guess Dune:Awakening might be fun in the long term too.
Only I got no time for another longtime game.
So I'll be doing the next best thing to playing the game...

So hold off and let other Testies be guinea pigs for this game? :o7:
For me this means the games enjoyment highly depends on having a whole lotta people around, preferably friendly. I played conan way after it was a thing, and having almost no one around made it pointless to play, the solo content was none.

There's a max of 40 concurrent players on a server (called a sietch), more people than that can be assigned to a server, but not play concurrently, i.e. you may just have to wait if 40 are on playing at that exact time. This is only the starting area - called Hagga Basin, once you move to the deep desert for high level PVP I understand there can be upwards of 500 concurrent players.
You can play with your friends on a different sietch - so we don't need to focus on all being on the same sietch starting out, you can join them on their's during play. Sietchs are spread throughout the world to improve performance / ping.
If you want your home base to be next to your friends (i.e. what you build), you need to start on the same sietch, but if they're on a different server you can visit and help build.
We'll also need to choose between Harkonnen or Atreides. Max guild size is 32.

Recently they had an open beta, I spent 36 hours playing and had an absolute blast.

I had only heard of the game literally a week before, so binge watched every video I could find on development from Funcom and YT people who played closed beta.
After checking everything out, it was an immediate 'buy' just before the open beta, which they changed to allow anybody who purchased access.

The launch was delayed until Jun 10th with access from Jun 5th depending on which version you purchased.

I picked up the 'Ultimate' edition, it would be a waste if I played Harkonnen if I get the Caladan (Atredies) palace building set and not use it...but having said that, you can have more than one character but they must be on different servers.

I spent 36 hrs playing the beta in the starter zones and had a blast. Despite only having basic access to buildings, I built a nice base. Water is king, so you need as much as you can find. Be it from harvesting dew flowers or extracting water from blood (literally) too much is never enough. You build a base it requires electricity from generators to run any production you have, and produces a shield....but of course you need to find materials for refining to then use in production...the generator also needs fuel...and YOU need to stay hydrated.

Find spot to build, claim land...find materials to build base...build base, find materials to build facilities and production plant...build them...find materials to feed into machines to produce things etc...stay hydrated...kill people...harvest their blood into water...this is even Waaaaaaaaay before mining spice.

The 'starter' map (Hagga Basin) including nearly 10ish areas are larger then the entirely of Conan Exiles...the PVP area (Deep Desert) is close to 680km2. In Hagga there is limited PVP only around wrecks, but the Deep Desert, with the exception of a small strip to set up a base camp is all PVP.

The combat was fun, using different classes, you pick an archtype to begin with, but can pick up all other classes by way of finding 'trainers' in game and can create what you like. You may specialize in the one class or mix and match. Like most games there are skill points involved, but the max level is 200 and you cannot have enough skill points to have everything from every skill line, so pick a primary (and a half or so) and pick the skills you want.

Ever wanted to compel an enemy to run towards you for no reason under your command?..you can...wanted to use a flying knee to kill someone? you can...grenades, poison capsules, knives, swords, rifles, pistols, smgs, heavy machine guns, shotguns, flamethrowers, drone turrets....speederbikes, dune buggies, Ornithopters...with machine guns and rocket launchers....post launch...TANKS..including tanks with FLAMETHROWERS..

Guild sizes are limited to 40, but there's nothing to say guilds cant have thirty 40 man guilds...at the end game where there's PVP the guilds participate on the 'Landsraad' which is the government that dictates what happens on the server for a week. Speak to other houses representatives find out what they need, do it and get their vote in the Landsraad, then decide what happens for the next week on things such as looting, mining yields etc etc.

As mentioned each sietch (or shard) houses 40 players, but those players can visit other players not in the same server and do any of the game play except claim land, the PVP Deep Desert can have 100's of players there from any of the shards, and similar for the two social hubs which are towns for the two factions, that have trainers, banks and trade facilities etc.

On mining..
You can hand mine spice in Hagga Basin, but the real mining is in the Deep Desert....you'll need transport Thopters to drop strip miners (both player controlled), scout thopters to look for wormsigns, other players out dumping thumpers to attract worms away from mining, assault thopters with troops in case a rival faction PVP shows up...so it seems it's certainly not a case of 'gather five flowers and five wood' for your guild to win etc.

Awesome! Do you need to choose a race? Does it have any affect on your stats?
All things remain equal, everybody is 'human' the character shown was made to look like a Harkonnen. Choose gender, make character then decide on your starting class, Trooper, Mentat (Assassin), Bene Gesserit (Space witch) or Swordmaster. The level cap is 200 and you gain skill points as you advance. You will never get enough points to max out every class but you build yourself based on preferred game play style.

When creating the character you decide on your home planet which gives a custom emote and you decide your 'social standing' in society which will change how some NPC's treat you and some dialogue choices.

So pick a class, learn some things then find trainers out in the world to learn different things and mix and match from all class skill lines to find something that works for you. After starting there is another class the 'Planetologist' you can learn survival skills from also, such as better mining yields, water yields, fuel consumption on vehicles and repair etc..up to you what you want to do.
