US Dollar is very low right now in my home country, so I decided to buy a medium freighter -- I've been flying Avenger for a while, but I knew I want a bigger ship from the very first moment in Universe.

Since I always do the opposite of what I'm told to do, I bought a Freelancer, instead of Cutlass ; ) First surprise: in addition to the shiny new freighter, I've got a Hornet medium fighter, for free. Although I checked several "Freelancer-vs-Cutlass" threads over the net before, nobody mentioned that the Hornet is bundled with most of the medium or large freighters, as a loaner for Arena Combat.

The Ship Loaner Matrix says:

/.../ Due to the current restrictions in Arena Commander, certain ships have a secondary loaner to allow them to play in all game modes i.e. the Freelancer MAX gets a Freelancer for PU and a Hornet for AC.

---- does it mean that at some stage all these loaners are going to be removed from inventory completely? -- or, are they going to be removed from PU only? I guess the current version of the game doesn't distinguish loaners from owned ships, that's why I can use both ships in Universe, but this might change any time.

Anyway, I took a Hornet for a test flight to Levski; kicked some NPC ass on route, then landed safely next to the air locks. Called my new Freelancer and loaded it with some small amount of titanium. It would be too easy to go back home without any problems ---- I experienced a journey-to-the-center-of-Delamar bug -- my elevator never arrived, while the doors were opening, trying to force me to commit suicide (done this before; elevator was dark, I thought the lights are out; turned out there were no lights, nor even an elevator). Another player arrived -- in his case elevator wasn't even responding to the calls. Long story short, we have managed to get to our ships; it involved my Freelancer dropping the other guy from the ramp next to his ship in another hangar -- we thought I'm going to get my crime stats increased, but apparently you have to touch the landing pad in order to be fined -- I didn't ; )

I've been interdicted on my way back home, so I gave my new armed freighter a try ---- I've been told that it sucks in a dog fight. Well, I shot down an NPC Cutlass in only few minutes : ) Hit by 2/3 missiles and not too many rounds -- unfortunately I didn't check how many of them were used; BTW, I split the guns into two groups -- having all 4 of them firing at the same time is not a good idea in my opinion, unless you never miss.

To summarize, I'm extremely happy with my new Freelancer. It's beautiful -- I prefer MISC design over Drake's -- you can feel its weight, while it's not too slow (for me); you can even dogfight with it. The only thing I would like to have is an ability to use rear turret, even locked.

What guns were you using to kill the Cutty and how were they split?
I'm assuming he was using the stock guns on the Freelancer...which would be 4 Size 3 Tarantula's. They are pretty deadly. They have a slow rate of fire, but if you get direct hits, nothing lasts long getting pounded by those things.

Tarantula GT-870 Mk3 Ballistic Cannon x 4, split into two weapon groups -- nr 1 from right wing with nr 3 from left wing in Group 1, and nr 2 from right wing with nr 4 from left wing in Group 2. This way if you miss your shot, you waste two rounds only, not four. I've done this before on other ships armed with multiple ballistic weapons, when I noticed how much ammo I'm wasting when missing the target ; )

By the way, maybe I hit it with 3 missiles, not 2... -- unfortunately I didn't record it.

How pretty she is... /click for 4K resolution/

I'm impressed with the Freelancer overall. At first look I didn't think it would be very good but now they might be my favorite line of ships. Wouldn't recommend going up against non-NPCs in good dogfighting ships but against NPCs it's pretty capable. Waiting for the MAX version to get into game, should be a great cargo ship with other utility.

Yes
nr 1 from right wing with nr 3 from left wing in Group 1, and nr 2 from right wing with nr 4 from left wing in Group 2
That is an option. When you line up your Freelancer horizontal with the target and turn with strafe to one side, the left for example, the left 2 guns get blocked by the ship. This also happens when you use gimbals and fire to one side, the opposite sides 2 weapons also will be blocked by the ship.
Would be interesting if you could use a two stage trigger, and stagger the fire groups by half second for straifing.
Spreading fire instead of concentrating.

Another good practice is to start firing one weapon group, add the second weapongroup 10-15 seconds later. This ensures that you keep fire on target. When the first weapongroup overheats, the second still has 10-15 seconds left before it overheats. By the time that the second weapongroup overheats, the first weapongroup has cooled down.
If a shield is down, it will need some rest and time to recharge. If you can keep fire on target, its shields don't get enough time to recharge.

You watch yer mouth. Around here a lot of folks think "Drake is life!"
That said, I have a Dur with a standard Lancer as PU loaner. I like it a lot. The lines are clean inside and out. But the cockpit view could be better. I do believe I'm gonna get me a Max as it will fit my needs(?) for a medium freighter just right. Enjoy your ship. You have choosen well.

Tarantula GT-870 Mk3 Ballistic Cannon
Tarantulas are a great choice for ballistic. They sound so fuckin' cool.

Words of wisdom.
I have a prospector and I got the Hornet also as a loaner, not gonna lie... I think I want one now!
Careful, it's a slippery slope, once you start to give in the darkside of the Force.

Bummer... ---- I like that fighter. On the other hand, it will probably take a lot of time before it disappears from my fleet.

Besides, it looks that Freelancer is not that bad against other ships (at least NPC-operated) as many people were saying -- I've been testing it for the last few days and I'm very happy with it. Despite horrible framerate drops, I managed to destroy 3 interdicting ships in a row -- Cutlass Black, Aurora LN and Gladius; obviously the last one was the hardest opponent --

-- Note the framerate; I would finish all of them much faster if it was more stable (and faster) -- I destroyed target's shield completely with a single missile few times, but I wasn't able to approach the target and finish it as fps was suddenly dropping to 5 or so... Before it went back to its 15-20, the target's shield was already recharged : /

I took down an Andromeda as well; unfortunately lagging was even worse that day, so it doesn't make any sense to publish a video clip of this fight -- but I've got a lot of pics! ; )

I agree the freelancer is a pretty scrappy ship which is why I am hanging onto my MIS. I still am not a fan of the aesthetic look of the Hornet which is why I never keep it but recognize its still a powerhouse in the fighter class as a brawler were my picks of Hurricane and Sabre while valid ships in their own right cannot trade blows and need to be flow more skillfully to be victorious in dog fighting a Hornet.

And as much as I am a fan of the Sabre I'd trade both for a chance to purchase the Lighting and am looking forward to earning it in the verse.

Still have to look at it while I walk up to it. Its like the walk of shame, after a night out drinking. Ya it can kick ass and take a beating but damn if it doesn't need a good referral to a talented plastic surgeon.

Of course the same could have been said of the original Mustang but now its truly a looker.
