I flew something I shouldn't have.

I flew the Ares Inferno for a bit last night. That beast is fun. And watching that NPC get vaporized as he tried to ram me was a riot.

Ammo is a little expensive, but satisfying. The role the Inferno is supposed to fill is already filled by my Eclipse but it was fun to fly.

Now I'm tempted. :)

@Blind Owl They have been 'un-nerfed' somewhat, to the extent that the guns actually hit targets again. Still takes some patience to make use of, and a player in a light fighter is the stated (and effective) counter to these ships. I bought mine back out, and have been enjoying them for running missions solo.

@Richard Bong Yeah, dangerous territory ;) They do work well, the tradeoff seems to be mostly the time it takes + repairs vs the cost of the torpedoes.

I'll repeat my often-stated opinion that these are ships which should not exist in this game.. To 'balance' them out CIG has had to retard handling and damage output to the point where it's ridiculous to call it a fighter at all. Just be honest and label them as mobile artillery.

Having said that (again) I still prefer to use these over the torpedo bombers. Just a preference, not necessarily rational.

Wait we are suppose to be rational. And your right these ships break combat balance. To an extent the redeemer also breaks ship balance with it being a beefy gun ship in a small package.

To be fair is maneuvers about the same as my Vanguard.
First thing I noticed, setting it up for the flight, was the 12 Arrester III and another 8 Size 3 missiles.

The damn thing is dangeroous without the gun.

While the range the Ares can fly is decidedly long, the Eclipse fills that role in my fleet because it is also a stealth scout, it is designed to fit on a pad on my Liberator and pops big ships. I've already got too many ships to fly from point A to Point B when I move my base. The Ares splats targets well, but doesn't fill the other roles.

Oh man. I used to live those two ships, but the nerf batt hit them so hard that I let them go. I'll have to try flying one when I get home, see how she feels
Reading this, my initial thought was CIG's nerf bat hit the Ares ships so hard that it knocked @Blind Owl & his family from Canada to Mexico? Sign me up to get nerfed next please! I wonder what I'll land & what the locals will be wearing. LoL

Good to know! Now I'm really going to have to take one for a spin. Dammit. Hahaha.

Now, I did recently come across an F8, and I do have a Vanguard Sentinel, a Redeemer, and a bunch of filthy Xenos ships (Defender and Glaive), so does it fit a roll that I'm missing with these ships?

Honestly though, if it feels good, it doesn't if matter if it fits a roll I already have. Lol

Dos answer es si, they do fill a roll. Pretty much just ONE role, and that is designated hitter. It's the single seat fighter concept taken to a logical extreme.
As @Richard Bong aptly pointed out up above, the Eclipse does a very similar job while providing some capacity to fill other niches as well. The main difference in using them, IMO is staying power. The Ares are intended to engage everything bigger than they are, and stay in the fight till it's over.

As to it filling a role different than your other ships.. well, yes. Yogi has made it clear in recent shows that weapon size and armor are going to create a functional separation in threat levels. Big ships are expected to shrug off little ships, to oversimplify. How that plays out, and whether that role is meaningful, remains to be seen.

From the ships you listed, yes. The Ares (and the Eclipse for that matter) is the correct ship to use when your target is bigger than a Retaliator and you rather fly with a wingman than a crew.

And see, here I am thinking I was going to try and downsize ye ol' fleet, lol.
Then usually y'all come along singing the praises of a ship that's been on my radar, and I start getting and itchy wallet finger, lol.

As I don't have a dedicated "big ship" killer, I may have to consider the Ares.
Oops, in the words of Sammy Hagar ... Mas Tequila!

Indeed! I have been loving the margaritas since I've been here.

Ares Inferno: Big Gun, right?
Nope, Big Missile Platform.
Now I have to consider changing from the Gorgeous Talon Shrike for escort missions
*scratches my head confused* How is the Ares Inferno, a small ship built around an S7 Gatling gun, not a big gun but a missile platform? Perhaps look into a MISC Freelancer MIS that has 4x S3 pilot controlled guns & a ton of missiles? MISC days are Nov 24-25 to rent 1 for free for a day at the IAE center.
