What are WB CCUs?
They're how CIG does discounts. They require new money (so no store credit) but you can get $5, $10, $15, $20 or more knocked off the price of a regular CCU.

"$5 dollars? Why bother" I hear you ask.
Well the cool thing about these is that you can combine the discounts if you can fit multiple WB CCUs in the same CCU chain. It's basically make your own discount. Now, you have to pay at least $5 for a CCU, so the smallest WB CCU you can buy is a $10 CCU discounted to $5, or a 50% discount. Not too shabby.

The thing to keep in mind here, is to always select the ship closest in value to the WB CCU discount point. So for example, let's say Arrow ($75 melt value normally) has a $5 discount WB CCU on it. You can't pick 325A to Arrow CCU, as that'd be $0 CCU and CIG doesn't do those. For obvious reasons. Instead, you could, and probably should, pick 315p ($65 melt value) for a $5 off, and pay $5 at 50% discount. Of course you could pick 300i ($60 melt), possibly because you own a 300i, and pay $10 at 33% discount. But you really shouldn't. This is for two reasons. Firstly, because WB CCUs are new money, so you'd have to put in $10 new money, when you could've just used $5 store credit for 300i to 315p and then used $5 fresh money for 315p to Arrow. Secondly, and more importantly, the smaller CCUs you use the better chances you have to fit some new future CCUs into the chain. Thirdly, specific to this and some other cases, 315p is permanently available. So even if you don't have store credits right now, you can get that normal 300i to 315p CCU whenever.

"Okey, but it's still just $5 dollars, like what are you going to do, keep doing this for years and, then what, get ships for next to nothing?"
Yes. Absolutely yes. This really is "build your own discount." If you have the patience to do this over several sale events, you can get something like my $155 Banu Merchantman CCU chain. That's quite a steal. Or if you got more money than patience, you can do this over like one event and walk away with perhaps a 30% total discount depending on the target ship and your luck. That's not bad either.

"But isn't the goal to support the development! Why not just pay the full price of ships?"
Well, if you get a ship for 50% off, you still got the option to buy a second ship also for 50% off. You'll still fund with the same amount, only you got twice the amount of ships now. Cool, right?

Weird. When I went to actually buy the Perseus CCU, it's now more expensive.
Yes. I checked my browser history and it was indeed $615 before (I had used google for currency conversion, so the amount got saved in the history. The original was 13.66 eur to usd, roughly $15 now it'd be 18€ to usd or roughly $20)

Ah, reddit says it was $615 for just a short while, same as IAE last year. Guess they made a mistake.

Concept ships buyable at the moment
So I was talking about these with a friend the other day and thought I'd share my musings here as well. I see Brictoria did something similar as well.
Here I think those Apollos in particular are quite interesting. And while the Zeus is very likely to be quite modest, it's still an easy way to turn store credits into discounted CCUs so definitely worth considering.

Ships in Devlopment

These ships are currently being worked on, and may release at/before IAE. As the ship's price will rise on release, it may be worth considering acquiring CCU's to them using credits. Given that the value of these ships will increase on the ship's release. It would also be risky to use any of these ships as a "starting" ship on a WB CCU, as on release, the price increase would eat into the "savings" on the WB CCU (The exception being "concept" ships, where the final value would also increase, returning the savings to the chain).

Umm, CIG, I think you made a mistake. That's like 3.8% discount. (Well, 50% on the CCU but usually it's closer to 10% of the ship price)
Looked at Cynically, it's likely the saving is so low because this is the closest price they can use in order to make the CCU cost more than $5, as there are ships to start the CCU from at $240, $235, $230, $225, $220. Otherwise they'd have to drop it to $220 in order to avoid the $5 CCU, which would provide more savings towards a chain than they like to provide...

I finally got around to refreshing my chains: I was surprised that I could use 2 of the Vanguard Warden CCU's (one mid-chain, one as an endpoint).

With how many A1-> "concept" San.tok CCU's I have spare, it's tempting to get extras of this one, even though it's only a 50% savings CCU...

If you don't have those old A1->San.tok CCU's, a good (semi regularly appearing in the past) set of CCU's might be the "A1 Spirit"/"Constellation Taurus" -> Cutlass Steel ($10) -> MSR ($5), which reaches the same endpoint (in dollar value) as the Vanguard Warden, but is likely to save more based on the past savings offered on CCU's to the closest starting options for the Vanguard Warden CCU's.

Well, $15 off the price of a Taurus, a $200 ship is pretty good, that's normal. It's usually like a bit under 10% of the price of the ship, rounded down to closest number divisible by 5.
Though it certainly seems like they're deliberately aiming for such gaps that you'll have to spend $10 new money on the CCU.

Oh wow, today is a great chance to grab a Perseus with Warbond discount before the flight ready price bump.
Now the flight ready price bumps can be somewhat unpredictable, but Perseus' big brother, Polaris, went from $750 to $975. I'd imagine Perseus has a more tame flight ready price bump, Polaris is a capital ship after all and Perseus' is already pretty expensive for a large ship. And Perseus is relatively recent, having been announced in 2020. Hm. I'd still give it a $50-$100 as a flight ready price bump.

Man, I've been a bit conflicted about whether or not I should get this ship.
2x S3 shields, that's like 135 000 shield HP (Quadrant, so 33.75k per face, might prio front face when taking down larger ships)
2x 2x S7 (or S8 if the rumors hold true) guns, supposedly bespoke. Could be really good or terrible.
2x 2x S3 remote turrets (they're remote so should be blade-able, this is nice)
No PDC (It's just a large)
20x S5 torps. Eh, might be very useful, might get crippled by replenishing costs.
Only weapon the pilot has are the torps. Those might require a loader too.
Even with blades, requires 3-4 people, and the pilot going at it alone is just pointless.

I mean, I already have the BMM.
2x S8 weapons (probably bespoke) on the pilot. Which I prefer over torps anyhow.
2x S5 turret on top
2x 2x S4 Remote turrets (this is better than on the Perseus)
2x Size 1 (PDC)
Shields same, both are said to be tough and durable, Perseus might be heaps more maneuverable even though BMM is supposedly 'fast' as per the description, though if you're going against other large / sub-capital ships I'm not sure maneuverability matters that much.
BMM doesn't have a ton of torps, but it does have a hangar, so you can bring like an additional fighter or something.
Skeleton crew for BMM is more like 2 (pilot + gunner, remote turrets bladed) though bringing the third would be useful but the pilot going solo will actually not be too bad either with 2 PDC and 2x 2x S4 bladed turrets and the pilot controlling 2x S8 weapons.

So the BMM seems like it could do what the Perseus does moderately well. Don't get me wrong, Perseus will probably be better in a fight since that's the only thing it does and the thing it's designed for. But just like Starfarer Gemini is surprisingly fun to hunt bounties with, I'd imagine BMM has plenty of fight in it on top of working as a freighter, explorer and a pop-up shopping mall. So I'm not sure if Perseus is dissimilar enough for me. Still... maybe I'll grab one just in case. Hm. Decisions, decisions.

With the new ship releases so far, I'm beginning to get concerned about how much the Asgard is ikely to cost.

At present, we have an "LTI token", "Capitol ship", and 2 "mid-range" ($250-$400) ships. This leaves 2 likely holes for the ship to be placed into: low-range ($100-$250), and high range ($400+).

I had been hoping that the Asgard might be priced lower than the Valkyrie, as although it looks to be larger than the Valkyrie, it wouldn't attract the "Dropship tax", being a "cargo"/vehicle transport (The best example of this would be the Cutlass Black (cargo/vehicle) Vs Cutlass Steel (Dropship)). Given it will be competing against the C2/M2 in the vehicle transport role (with roughly 1/2 the vehicle capacity and considerably lower cargo space), it's difficult to see how it could be justified as being priced the same/more than a C2, but I'm starting to think that this is what CIG are intending.

I'm also curious as to whether it will arrive with a pack containing the Asgard and Nova, given it will be the smallest ship able to transport it.

Hopefully it's priced below (and my chain to it comes in below[1]) the Valkyrie, as it should make a good ROC/ATLS Geo mobile solo mining platform (it would be even better if a GOLEM also fitted into it, although that seems unlikley as it and the Nova are roughly the same size - Alternatively, If it had the ability to fit a GOLEM along with spare mining bags, that would be useful as well, cutting back on having to head to refineries as often when solo mining).

[1] Currently my Valkyrie chain is $139, but can drop to $102.50 (giftable), or $77.50 (account locked) if made into my priority chain: CCU chaining can be quite helpful when seeking to acquire the more expensive ships...

Well, it appears that CIG have decided to "compensate" us for the small discount offered on the day 1 CCU (Vanguard Warden) by adding an additional $5 savings onto todays CCU offering (Starfarer Gamini) compared to past times it has been available ($25 savings today, rather than the $20 savings offered on it in the past).

Was it planning, or was it an unintended consequence of trying to offer the customer "better savings", which caused this new CCU to offer considerably worse value than the past one for the ship: The old offering was $5 to save $20, whereas today it is $15 to save $25... I'll leave that to the reader to decide for themselves.

Personally, I'd prefer the CCU's to allow purchase at any price between the normal ship price and the "maximum savings" price, to allow the ability to squeeze savings into a chain, rather than requiring larger "credit" CCU's to fill gaps that are slightly smaller than a WB CCU would normally fit... Having this ability could tempt more people to buy CCU's/spend more money than the current system does.

It looks like we get a "duplicate" CCU today - The F7C's price and savings match those of the Freelancer MIS from the 19th, so it may be of limited interest to people.

I'm disappointed by the price of the Asgard, as I saw it as a larger "Cutlass Black" with the Valkyrie being a larger "Cutlass Steel", and so hoped they'd price the Asgard accordingly.

On the positive side, the default paint of the Asgard is a reasonable equivalant to the Valkyrie's BIS paint from a few years ago, and the concierge paint (at least in the pictures on the site) looks to be similar to the Valkyrie Liberator, so for those interested in the vehicle/cargo use for the Valkyrie, rather than as a troop transport, this looks like a cheaper way to get a cheap BIS/Liberator "Valkyrie" than the GM...

Added some questimations about the currently for-sale concept ships, how likely it is we'll see them before/at Intergalactic Aerospace Expo this year and then just some vague guesses about how much the flight ready bump might be. (It's usually something like 10% rounded down quite liberally for newer ships, and perhaps a bit more for older)

That's a good point, and at least the Asgard is somewhat cheaper than the Valkyrie. Still, it can carry a Tonk so I guess it can't be like $200.

In theory, there wasn't any reason the Asgard couldn't have been priced around the $200 mark...

Compared to the Constellation Taurus, for example, which sits at $200 in the pledge store:
  • It carries a similar amount of cargo as the Constellation Taurus (180 to the Taurus' 174 (or 168 readily useable)).
  • It can carry larger vehicles (such as Nova), while Taurus is limited to Ursa-sized vehicles.
  • It lacks a tractor beam to assist with loading/unloading.
  • It is less secure (all entrances to Asgard require exposing cargo area to outside access, whereas Taurus has an entrance separate from cargo area).
  • It has lower pilot-controlled firepower (Taurus has 4 S5's with 2,644 sustained DPS, whereas Asgard has 6 S3's with 1,176 sustained DPS) according to Erkul.
  • It has marginally higher "turret" DPS (2 S4 with 589 sustained DPS, compared to 2 S3 with 588 sustained DPS) according to Erkul.
  • It has fewer missiles (16 S3, compared to 24 S2 on the Taurus), with lower total damage (40,423 compared with 49,380 for the Taurus) according to Erkul.

All things considered, there's an awfully high "tax" (both in price and firepower) on this ship for it to be able to carry a Nova (and if you paid $50 more, you could have a ship with almost 4 times the cargo space that can carry 2 Nova's)...

Well, it's not that it fits 'just' Nova. Nova is a pretty huge vehicle, so obviously all smaller vehicles and ships will fit as well. Like Drake Golem, Misc Razor, someone even claims they got an Aurora in there. It's a quite capable pocket carrier able to carry some small ships, not just snubs. So yeah, CIG taxes that capability heavily, regardless of how useful fitting an Aurora in an Asgard actually is.
