Instancing with 50-100 players is out, now 1000 players?

It does not sound like its 100% proven yet, but Chris Roberts is on record here saying that the original instancing system we have all been told about since the beginning is now old and busted. New tech is in that can potentially allow 1000 players?

Even without knowing any facts, I will be a bit more conservative on that number, but even 500 players on a server will be an amazing achievement!

I talked to CR about this very thing a few years ago.

He mentions "things you can do with the cloud", and he is referring to cloud auto scaling.

So it's not a super computer, but it is the ability for the number of computers all working on the same problem to increase the number of CPUs as needed. This you can scale up without having to constantly pay for huge amounts of computer power that you rarely actually need.

When there are 10 players in an area, you only need 2 cores. When there are 1000, you need 200 cores, which can't be done in 1 machine, but it can be done on multiple machines.

At that point the main blocker becomes network throughout, so it doesn't work for unlimited scaling, but it's way, way better than trying to force everything to run on a single physical server, which is historically how things have been done.
