So the energy gun version is out. As previously mentioned the L-21 had its impressive gun range nerfed. The L-22 likewise has a 3km range. Apparently either no one at CIG had originally noted the 5k ranged allowed the original release to attack ships with relative relative impunity, or they were just selling ships.

My bet is on the latter.

Nice ship and still maybe first pick for a naval fighter, but nothing like with the 5km range weapons.

The 5k range was not actually that useful. Almost anything other than an Idris can move out of the path of projectiles fired 3 seconds earlier.

With the current flight and weapons tuning, a smartly-flown light fighter won't be touched by any turret weapon beyond 1000m. Agility tanking is still a real thing, and the basis of players bemoaning the 'Light Fighter Meta'. I've used the L-21 to solo Hammerheads at close range; ships with Point Defense are a different story and I have to either stay back beyond 1km or hug the target close enough to ram into it. The Wolf can do either.

Looking forward to trying out the L-22. It'll have a solid PvP role and should have less downtime for PvE grinding than it's older brother. But not likely to buy one, and DEFINITELY NOT a fan of bespoke weapons.

Edit: The reason I'll stick with the L-21 is that ballistics don't care. How viable size 4's will be in the long run remains to be seen, but the minimal damage passthrough from energy weapons means that some targets are just out of reach for the L-22, whereas the L-21 will always put some hurt on target.

Hopefully CIG will allow swapping those guns eventually, but for now the original is best for my use cases.

EDIT for future readers: They DID allow for swapping weapons between the ships, kits for this dropped along with the L-22.

Well you can just go to the IAE. The L-22 is sitting centerstage on the showroom floor.
And today (Monday 24th) the spotlight switches to Kruger and Mirai / MISC.
So tonight you can try it for free.
Exciting, isn't it?
And now back let me go back to my Clipper...

Looks like they added some dorsal stabilizers and dropped the fuggly daggerboard. The are repeaters putting out >2k DPS with a projectile speed of 1650, which is a little less than the Galdereen, in damage, speed and range, but the spread is less, the power consumption and temperature to IR are both much less. Personally I can’t see why they went proprietary again.

If you want to compare it against like fighters, plug it into the performance calculator next to a Talon, Gladius, etc. Thise others don’t have the tiny footprint however, so flying off an Idris, Liberator, etc. this could be my first pick. Certainly it looks much nicer that the standard Wolf. I would call the Alpha, “The most beautiful ship in Star Citizen”.

So, in case anyone wonders; the Wolf does exhibit the tiniest maneuverability advantage over the Alpha Wolf. For that you have to drag around the stupid dagger board fin. My guess is most normal players like the look of the Alpha so much more that is what they will fly. In the pledge store you can buy both ballistic and energy guns for the two wolves so you can fly the 21 with energy or the 22 with ballistics.

So, IMHO; the Alpha with ballistics is going to be the new meta for deck fighters. It’s tiny size and turret busting firepower is going to prove a superb combination.

So for instance, the Liberator looks can house 3 Eclipse, 15 Alphas, and 3 Retaliators for their bunks and torpedoes; to comprise a shockingly powerful strike force of 27 S9 torps and the means to get them to target. That is approximately 11M points damage delivered past the shields. Certainly enough to scrub a pair of Void Bombers, a Polaris, an Idris, and perhaps even the vaunted Vanduul Marauder Destroyer.

Filling a Liberator with 15 Alphas (plus a Medivac respawn point and maybe a couple Razor EX scouts) could work extremely well in coordination with a Polaris. The problem with the Polaris is it is too squishy to go toe to toe with a pair of Void Bombers wielding their 6 S10 weapons, but given 15 Alphas with S4 ballistics to remove PDWs on the bombers and their many turrets, the Polaris is really perfect to finish the job. The Polaris torpedoes do 21M damage total, if you can get them on target, so combined with the Liberator strike team I’ve described, we’re talking about 32M points damage.

I like it.
