No quantum drive makes it pretty useless. I mean, sure, in Arena Commander, especially on a race track, cool.
I think had they given it a Q drive, no one would buy or fly anything else. It's half the target size of an arrow and pulls twice the gees of a Gladius. 60% more gees than the Razor nd Arrow.

For carried fighter looks like the new meta. You will have the danger of leaving your spotters behind if you need to jump your Polaris, but this gives you twice as many of them. That's huge. In fact, ships like the Polaris could carry so many of them that it's just not practical to load up on all Furies. So the Polaris ship's complement of carried tenders is going to diversify and likely include things like the Raven and Mantis.

I'm counting it all good, despite that till now I've always said I would never fly a snub with no Q Drive.

I have to wonder how this is going to affect use of ground vehicles. Why would you buy a Ballista when you can fly one of these on the surface?

Hmm... I wonder how many would fit in a BMM.

First, you got the hangar that's designed for Defender. Googling a bit for the BMM hangar size, I found a familiar face, seen in the mirror a time or two, making estimates of the hangar size.
Let's go with 26.2m x 25.8m as I've previously estimated. Fury is now supposedly 7x3m. Going in a Column-Walk-Column(-Column-Walk-Column) -layout, leaving 1m wide paths, this makes a very nice 7x7 grids with 2 furies leaving everything accessible. This way you'll fit 3* (2*3) = 18 in the hangar alone.
But you also got the cargo hold. 2880 SCU, afaik it's five 32 SCU boxes atop, 3 per column and 6 per row. So the floor is then at least 3*8*1.25 * 6*2*1.25. There'll be some walkways etc. there but, let's just go with that. So 30*15. That'd be 30/7(*2) * 15/7 = 4*2 *2 more so 16. At the very least. Probably way more.

So you'd have something like 34 or more Furies in a BMM. Now that's a Q-ship!

Just keep in mind that there will always be a limit to how many ships can participate in any action. If CIG sets it at 50/side, best is optimize by going for larger ships and crews. So there are limits to the utility of such a tiny ship. Also keep in mind that the Razor is not much bigger. If it turns out we can cut the wings off the Razor without sacrificing any maneuverability in vacuum, it will actually have a smaller footprint, and it has a Q drive. It also has half the guns, less maneuverability, etc. The M50 is still a better choice in some situations, and it is dirt cheap. The only ship I can see being somewhat displaced is the Arrow. We often choose the Arrow over the Razor and M50 because of its greater firepower but the Fury is up tussling in the same DPS as the Arrow. Now there is a ship with a significantly tighter turning ability than the Arrow. That is in a sense game changing.

The closest competitor to the Fury is the Archimedes. It's footprint is not really bigger. If we had vertical storage racks like bunk beds for the Archimedes, there would be the 30% greater acceleration of the Fury to tell them apart and that's it. . .save for the utter coolness factor of bubble fighters.

Kind of begs the question of why build it at all.

For stacking them up tight, and getting more capacity, I'm not sure how well it would work, from a practical standpoint. You need clearance for take off, landing and maintenence.
Then there is the question of lifesupport on the Carrier. All those pilots have to use the head and recharge their O2 somewhere.
Then there is, of course, the question of balance, which might cause CIG to throw other obstacles at the idea.
I wouldn't advise counting on more than two Size one ships on an XS pad and even that might be pushing it.

I've always said the same of ground vehicles. They don't make lots of sense unless you are fighting or traveling inside a domed city or arcology. But as we've seen with ArcCorp, Hurston, New Babbage and Crusader they don't really want us driving around their cityscapes.

Someone over on Spectrum speculated if you pulled the gas processing tanks off a Starfarer that gantry way would make a decent flight platform for 6 Furies :)
Someone over here did as well a couple of days ago on the first page of this thread :)
Something I thought of on the way home from work tonight:
  • MISC (through MIRAI) make the Fury.
  • MISC also make the Starfarer.
  • The Fury is smaller than the fuel pods on the Starfarer.

What are the chances that CIG will make changes to the Starfarer (or a variant of it) to allow 6-8 Fury's to be carried as snub fighters\bombers in place of the fuel pods?

The central walkway between the fuel pods should be sufficient to get the pilots from the Starfarer to the cockpits of the Fury's, and there would be plenty of space to have them hang from the ship where the fuel pods are located, so in theory there wouldn't be too much work required for this...

This is music to my ears, my 'Farer has fallen victim to Solo Gladius in the past so having a wing of nasty gnats fall out my aas and slap the fools would be a very special day indeed :-)

This is one of those ships that I am not sure how practical it will be against anything but fighters and only in greater numbers swarm style. We have started to see and I'm sure as the start doing balance passes on the large and capital ships that small arms like these will not do enough damage against a large shield to even weaken it. The other limiting factor will be the number of players a server is able to handle. Both will have a negative impact along with the lacking a q drive these ships usefulness in fleet dynamics.

And before you go and say oh I'll have npcs fly them. Chris and CIG has been very clear that you can have npc crew on your multi-crew ship and hired npc wingman flying their own ships they do not want or intend for us to have npc fleets.

I think their true usefulness will be based on how much substance dps they will have along with their ability to survive be it some armor shield and/or maneuverable.

This ship might be very useful in the role of bomber escorts/ interceptors. But they are going up against ships like the hornet, hurricane, and scropius which have turrets. And most of the med and larger ships also have turrets which I have a feeling will pop theses ships quickly as well as out reach them with their guns. And while it's possible to bring a lot of them into a conflict the downtime between ship blown up and pilot rescue before they can get back into the action will be costly.

I'm not against this ship as I'm most definitely getting one I'm just not sure what it's role is at the moment besides looking good.

I recommend using Quantum drive to close with your target in a bomber and again to escape after unloading. They aren't bomber escorts, in the sense of Retaliator or even A2.

I think the importance of this type of snub is going to be longevity of fights. Because it does not have a Q-drive, I'm thinking ships that have staying power in a fight will benefit the most. This makes me think larger parent ships are best:
  • Polaris
  • Javelin
  • Idris
  • Kraken
My thinking is you need a ship large enough to not leave the snub behind.

Then there will be larger ships that are more fragile that may want a way to get attackers to disengage to give time for an escape. Or to have fun with PvE:
  • Origin Ships, 400i through 890 Jump.
  • Galaxy variants.
  • Perseus, Hammer Head, Nautilus, etc
My thinking is a couple of MX's may be able to launch enough missles to give the pilot time to redock and the medium (more fragile ship) to escape.

I also wonder if they are a metric to be able to attach to a Hull series ship. That would make them instant defense and escort. There is the potential for large scale FPS support as well. That could be fun.

Ultimately, I'm thinking there are a lot of emergent game play options for this sort of vehicle.

They’re listed as pulling 18 gees. By way of comparison, I think the Arrow pulls 13 and the Arrow is hard to hit because of this combined with its small silhouette. This is half the size of an Arrow.

This thing is going to be VERY hard to hit and will outturn everything. With a good pilot it should scare the hell out of every other fighter pilot, and groups of them will be able to kill the Idris. Finding the best platform for them is key. I think the Polaris is due out end of this year? Imagine 12 of these in the Polaris bay. Absolutely terrifying. We won’t know until we see it strafe, but I think this in intended to outperform airframes in vacuum. It couldn’t hurt to do some wargame planning around this now.

My guess is the hidden nerf here is reduced longevity—it will run out of fuel mere minutes into a conflict. The counter for this is carry twice what you need, return and refuel them. Could be a Polaris can only field 6 of the 12 it carries at a time, but that is still better than 3 Gladius or 6 Arrows.
