If you want something on the "cheaper scale" that is multi use I would highly recommend getting a avenger titan. The reasoning behind this is that it can pack some decent firepower, carry some cargo, plus with three versions of it later in the game you will be able to have alternatives available if you decide to change things up role wise. Moving past that is the Cutlass Black another good ship that can perform in many different roles but when it comes down to it the Cutlass is not a ship you want to spend a lot of time on. I actually have owned both of these at one time currently use the avenger as my cheap solo ship, and melted the Cutlass though. Lastly there is two ships that would be better multipurpose ships one being the freelancer just due to the fact that it carriers better weapons than the previous ships has a well designed crew area, has a well designed cargo area, again comes in many types and is a pretty sturdy ship and quite fun to fly. On the higher end of things just to through it out there the Constellation is not bad, and the real higher end the Carrack.

The avenger is that great solo ship for some entry level dog fighting, small cargo and delivery/pick up missions. The cutty offers more bang, but is a larger target, yet packs more cargo. If I had to choose a starter with a little extra kick, yes I would take the Avenger Titan, if I could afford a little more, push it to the cutty.

I personally can't stand the way the avengers fly but it's been awhile. Has the handling changed so it's not a brick? Also on topic it might be worth the wait to see what the 300 series rework looks like. A 300 with cargo space actually might be nice. A 335c?

I think the Khartu-al has the roundest cockpit of all the ships. The Reliant is close but it's more of an oval. They really should have made the Connie Aquila with more of a bubble on the front. The thing is I don't think we'll ever have a truely round ship in the game because that would be hard to land. Also copyright issue with the Borg would probably crop up.

This is why I use a Javelin to transport my red solo cups. Can't take chances.
Especially with the owl around. He might be blind but that bird can smell Solo Cups in space, especially if they once had or will have beer in them.

The only issue with Origin is the cost doesn't really compare to functionality. And I can't imagine its going to have more cargo space then the Aurora.

and the real higher end the Carrack.
I would love to hear more on this idea.

Was thinking as I read everyone's suggestion that CIG really has done something remarkably well. They have created enough distinction and trade offs to make each ship unique and fit a role that allows us to come to vastly different opinions on which ship is the best even when it comes to a specific idea as best multi role.

The Carrack is the cheapest ship to include Capital class scan. For that reason and with the modular sections devoted to transport, it has a huge appeal for a freighter. The Polaris is faster and also includes Cap scan, but will haul far, far less.

If you're counting on your active scans to keep you safe (which is a good strategy, IMHO) the Carrack has many uses. I think it will be key when we find out what will fit in that hangar. If a Sabre will fit in there, the Carrack is suddenly mighty. But what if it only fits a Gladius? It is still pretty friggin' mighty!

People don't get what a key thing it is to have a hangar. Has got nothing to do with how many ships will fit in at once. You can fly them alongside. The issue is what you can refit and refuel. If you can fit a Sabre, you can fit ten Sabres, one at a time.

I guess I never really saw the Carrack as being a mid sized ship nor its cargo capacity being appealing. Especially when you compare it to ships like the 890 Jump which about he same size and has almost twice the storage capacity and far better weapons, or for a little bigger the Merchantman with 3 times the storage capacity and better weapons. The only thing the Carrack has on them is a capital class scan and a rover bay. After all its primary role is described as expedition and while it might be able to see enemies and avoid them its not really going to be successful in fighting them or running from them once spotted.

The problem CIG deliberately created is that short range fighters can't manage the distances transports fly, and all dogfighters are short range. So the Vanguard and Defender are the only two viable options, unless you provide refueling in flight. StarG can do this if there's a refueling probe (Tana) and the Carrack and Polaris can do this since they have hangars and can refuel one bird at a time.
I think it will be rare to have shipping paths without rest stops, and beyond the range of fighters with proper support.

"Some ship families, such as the Aurora and 300 series, have variants that come with a Fuel Intake by default, while the rest of the series can equip one if you procure it separately or transfer it from another ship. Furthermore, just because a ship may not have a Fuel Intake does not mean it cannot operate in deep space. There are no hard restrictions in place to prevent it. You will just need to consider your actions more carefully. You could leave enough fuel to return, call for a refuel, or make your journey a one way trip. "

"Most ships have a Fuel Intake, again snubs tend to be the exception, that regenerate fuel from the environment. " (Fuel Mechanics - Shipyard)

"Yes, all ships will be fitted with a “Fuel Port” item which enables transfer from one ship to another with the appropriate equipment such as the Starfarers refuelling boom or drones that can refuel. " (Vulcan Q+A)

In this case you could schedule a starfarer at a halfway point (and not just for a tana), and most likely just for quantum fuel - not a hard restriction, but a logistics problem you could think out/out think.

I think the only scenario that might force a ditching of even a short range escort would be extremely long/uncharted/desolated which I have to imagine will be more than rare for the average shipper.

When I see the ideas, I wonder how many years will pass before I actually try them, well probably will not even remember star citizen when is finally released, hope my kids play it sometime,

In other topic... And since I don't have anyone else to talk about this (I know, sounds sad) I need some advice to clear my head...

I want to get a make money ship... I have to say I love the reclaimer, how it looks, and how is supposed to work, is just awesome, I would like to do some mining and also get a Merchantman to do trading... But since I'm not rich yet, need to keep a low profile until I pay my computer (to play SC lol) so i need recommendations, which ship do you recommend, reclaimer, merchantman, prospector? Or one bigger than the prospector?

Retaliator! Cheaper than a Merchantman, has cargo modules, and supposedly will get a mining module if I remember the original q+a correctly. Do some shipping/trading, do some mining, bomb some poor schmuck doing some trading and mining!

But in all seriousness, what ships do you have now?

And not sad at all. None of my IRL friends talk Star Citizen.

just one point...a large freighter may not be using light fighters as escorts. A few Connie Andromedas and a few Vanguard wardens...maybe even a hammerhead or Valkyrie or two and you have a pretty solid defense and longer range. The connie’s missiles alone will be a huge deterrent, especially if they follow through with turret operators being able to lock and launch missiles.

Everyone keeps talking about dogfighters as escorts, but I really only see that when you have ships like the idris and kraken as part of your fleet.

I think that's because there is a middle ground - i.e. operating costs might knock a Hammerhead out of play. And not every shipping operation will have multiple connies going! Smaller ships like a gladiator bomber or two, or a few cutlass blacks and a caterpillar will surely be threats to even a few connies. I think many ships might like a light fighter escort. It would be cheaper than the heavies, and more than enough to chase a ship out of camping in your blind spots - which is the real threat. Hence why some mid-size ships have snubs.

On the other hand, the idris and kraken have nothing to fear from dogfighters, and if your connie scenario stands, why would they ever maintain fighters if they can't fend off threats like a retaliator in small groups?

The balance may not be here now, but I think fighters will be a threat to mid-size ships, even in final implementation.

I say the freelancer Dur, can handle itself in a fight, room for up to 4 people, haul some cargo, and able to explore. a nice all around ship.
I'm not a freelancer guy... i just don't like the desing of the ship =/ saw too many crash-sites of it XD

I have a Sabre and a Cutlass Black,

i was thinking about getting a prospector to do some mining (not really sure about this because in every space game i have played, shooting to rocks is not really a good way to make money because of the time/profit formula)

Could get an Andromeda to make trading (medium size ship) and also use it to explore, would get the "gunship" one so if i have to defend myself i can do it.

Was thinking about getting the cutlast black with the Nox too, they make great combination,

the more i think... the more confuse i get... LOOOOL
