@Adiran with the wall of thoughtful text. Must be a SPAI!

I'm honestly torn. I do love the Carrack and the Reclaimer. But it hard to tell at this point what I'm really going to love doing. Exploration has always topped my list, along with privateering, but there's so much more to do in this game. The mechanics and versatility of the Reclaimer cannot be denied. It may end up being a hell of a pirate ship. And I freaking love the thought of that. I desperately want a salvage ship, but I honestly thought it'd end up being whatever smaller ship they come out with, or the Cat (provided she ever gets the modules for salvage.)

Knowing my luck I'll end up with both. Dammit. Haha.

Now your talking.. I just didn't want to be the first to say it.

I'm pretty confident that they will raise the price on the Reclaimer at least $100.00 and price the smaller ships around $300.00.

So I showed my package, but nothing happened. Am I doing it wrong @Stevetank and @Han Burgundy?

I've defeated multiple beers tonight. All with a teething toddler sleeping on my chest. #Imagod
I've been out at a party for the last 6 hours, so you'll have to forgive me. I can't drink, but I brought rum and vodka for those who can. Plus some 7up, so I could have something. Went well with the cherry flavored vodka.

I'll send it through the calculator and see what I come up with. I see you already melted the ship I sent your way, ha.

So, this is my plan and how I see it playing out in theory. Right off the bat, I need cash. There's always a gold rush at the beginning of the game. If you can get out ahead of the majority of the player base, you will stay at the high end of the richie-rich scale. It's going to be all about being in the first group to be powering up the big ships and pulling in the profits. You can also get a foothold in the higher end markets before anyone has a chance to fight over them. There are bound to be limited resources, so getting to them first is going to be a big deal.

This is going to put you in a good position to build a solid and successful infrastructure that will keep you pulling in good money throughout your time in SC. It'll be a race though, so you need to get there in the first group. It's like that in every MMO I have ever played. If you can get ahead of the curve, it's easier to stay ahead. So with that in mind, how do you do that?

I am currently hedging my bets on that. I have a Reclaimer and a Genesis that are currently at the top of my bets. The rest is speculation about high value/high risk smuggling. That's my BMM and Lancer Max. However, I suspect that either the reclaimer or the genesis will be really good earners right out of the gate.

The Reclaimer should be good at the beginning because of human nature. If there is the ability to PVP, there will be PVP. People will step out into the PU for the first time and pick a fight with the first person they come across. I suspect the first month is going to have an insane amount of destroyed ships. People will need to figure out how far they can push, who they can safely fight, where they can safely go, and what the repercussions will be if they fail. One way or another, I suspect there will be ship parts all over the PU. The Reclaimer will be perfect at picking up after players discover all the bad choices out there.

The Genesis is the other promising one that I have. However, this depends greatly on design choices and exclusivity. It will only be a solid earner if CIG makes it a solid earner by generating demand for personnel transport. It will also require that the PU is not flooded with these transport ships. So the jury is still out on this, but depending on how it plays out, it could be one of the best earners in the game. Time will tell.

So long story short, the reclaimer should be a safe bet. I would pick it over the carrack only because we don't know how profitable exploration will be. Plus, there are going to be far more people doing exploration on the first day than there will be pulling salvage. So the explorer market is going to be flooded from day one. The salvage market shouldn't be near as packed.

That's all in theory though. It depends greatly on how many ships and of what kind make it out and populate the universe. It is also greatly dependent on design choices that CIG has yet to lock in. ...but we all know that.

Thing to consider is whether exploration is your main focus. Because you can jump from your Cat to your Turtle to your Fighter all day long, but if you're off in deep space exploring, how will you get back to another ship in a timely manner?

Locations of Hangars is going to be important and when you're on the other side of the galaxy late and night and need to log off, you'll have to spawn back into your Carrack the next day and spend just as much time running back as it took you to get here.

On the other hand, a Reclaimer can do most of it's salvage on short run missions and will rarely travel more than a few systems, consuming all it can find before moving on. Plus with its giant size, could probably house a smaller ship and definitely a Dragonfly or two.

Also, as @Bruttle said, people will leave salvage from day one. But one thing he didn't mention was if you're going Pirate, salvage is a much looser term.

See that guy that left his ship to enter the satellite to turn it back on? That's not a ship he left, that's salvage!

See the two people sitting in their Freelancer arguing over which system to jump to? That's not a Freelancer, that's salvage!

And with the ability to equip ships with tractor beams and emp weaponry, practically any ship with nonfuctioning engines is salvage. Which means EVERY ship is salvage!

Oh yes. Privateering to be exact. I fully intend to reallocate assets from less deserving persons.

Thank you.

It went to a good cause: jelping a fellow TESTie. You remember there were TESTies who needed a BMM at the original price? Well, I melted the DF, then bought it back with cash, and upgraded it to a BMM then gifted it.

You're thoughts are very valid. As much as I want to explore, earning some dollar dollar bills at the beginning of the game may be more pertinent. Exploration can be done later, at a leisurely pace.

Exactly this. I think the Reclaimer will be far more Privateering friendly.

On a serious note, I think the Reclaimer is going to be more of a cash machine and will be able to find more work than a Carrack.

You can tag a Reclaimer along to other TESTies missions and nom up some delicious scrap, but a Carrack is a one trick pony IMO.

But I also think exploring sounds kinda boring, so I'm a tad biased.

Yeah, I concur. The Reclaimer will be a cash cow, and it'll be fun to use that thing in a offensive manner, hehe.

I just applied one of my original Carrack to Reclaimer CCUs.

I'm still going to try and get to a Carrack, as she was one of my first loves, and having that hanger and scout will be prime. I can upgrade my Redeemer to BMM, but I have no way of getting across to the Carrack ATM. I may have to spend actual money. Ugh. Haha.

I'm going to end up with both.

I'm waiting for what Tank comes up with but until then lets play a game.

Each ship should support the next to reach an End Goal. Adjust Blind Owls line up and spend no new money.

Starter package

Starfarer (lots of things I do not like about this ship but it's the best cash cow and support ship for any fleet)

Reclaimer

Turn a BMM into a 600i

Keep the Buck so you have something to play with in SC now.

Everything else earn in game.

Taking one of them on a pirating run:

Carrack - Take anything not bolted down, I'll hold it in my cargo.

Reclaimer - What do you mean we have everything not bolted down? Hold my beer!

Owl, I think the best decision was to turn the Carrack into the Reclaimer right now. It helps out IRS because it gives us a cash cow based on destruction. It's pretty much the only way to make money in a fight unless there's a bounty. It also gives you a money making platform in your spare time. It also lets you collect components, which will be important since we may be in areas where component insurance is void, so we'll need lots of replacement parts.

If you really want that Carrack, I suggest turning your Terrapin into a BMM and then picking up the Carrack from there this Anniversary sale. You're trading a small exploration ship for an end game exploration ship. You already have a smaller ship that can go the distance and look around, your Sentinel. The Terrapin can't bring back much of anything from an exploration voyage. I know it looks cool, but it's over priced and better off that you just get that in game. I'll help you steal one, lol. You already have the CCUs to take that Terrapin and make it a $350 ship. This is going to be your cheapest way to getting the Carrack.

I think that your other ships look fine. The Vanguard sucks now, but it's going to get much better once they increase the time to kill, add in repairing, and fix that turret. It's a good ship to keep, especially since you have the whole set. A Cutlass is good, I'm hoping the Blue ends up being the best since the Devs still think that we'll be able to swap out the back room with the other Cutlasses. Defender looks fun since escorts aren't as good unless they can go the distance like the previous 2 ships I mentioned. Gotta have Dragonflies.

I'm still holding on to my Pirate Cat too. It's either going to be awesome or stay as my mobile crane. That tractor beam, the escape ship, and how you can kinda run it with just 3 players is pretty awesome, even though it doesn't have the firepower I want. If we ever get auto turrets, we have a HUGE server rack in the back to install lots of avionics equipment to power them. We only need to install 2 to have the Cat be a 1 man ship. You can pilot the slow ship and do your own shield engineering from the pilot seat. It's not fast enough that you really have to pay a lot of attention. Just mash the numpad on your keyboard and adjust your shields. It needs a LOT of the Item 2.0 and future systems to really be worth it, so we'll have to see what becomes of the Caterpillar. (Do. Not. Melt. Pirate. Caterpillar.)

Other than that, I think you're good. Already got the Reclaimer and you should try to make your Terrapin a Carrack. I think we're done here :)
