I think subscribers can fly Sabres for free this month, but you can't put whatever weapon on you like. You have to fly with what they give you, which is what is described on the ships comparison page. Is that right?

BTW, I just saw a vid with DanGeesling flying 4 S3's on his Sabre, and it is one hit and target goes dead. The Tarantulas he is flying are slow, so you need to lead the target, but it is so much firepower on target at once that he never needs to worry about taking down shields, etc. Just squeeze-and-boom. This is almost 5X the firepower of 3X 3MA on the smaller fighters.

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwWwuzx_5vU

It is probably hard to hit with those guns out to their 6km range, but practice makes perfect and my guess is most people flying them regularly would learn to hit with them within a couple weeks. That is just amazing raw killing power, all packaged up in a stealthy, agile, fast, long-range murder machine.
No thats not true, its added to your hangar and can be equipped just like any other ship.

Wasn't aware you could rent ships. Is that a subscriber thing?
Nope. Anyone can.
goto RSI>Store>Electronic Access.
You can rent ships, weapons, components.
You can earn REC to rent by flying Vanduul Swarm in public matches, battle royal, racing, etc etc etc.
Anything you rent you have for 7 days in game time. So 7 days of actual playing. I have stuff that I rented back in March and beyond.

Awesome. I'll need to look into this. Thanks.

I was referring to the free ship that subscribers get owl, but yes that would include rented ships. Personally on my sabre i tend to run 4x Panther Repeaters, although i also tested the Mantis's recently and they are kinda fun and seem to kill ships quicker, but really short ranged. I have also tried the 4x S3 tarantula's, but find i dislike slow fire rates on faster ships.

Now if you want to go overboard and have fun, 4x Combines on the Connie is just a little bit of overkill. (I still have all four mounted on mine, with my 5th combine on my hornet xD).

If you go the way of the hornet, grab a flashfire mount and get your hands on a combine and either 3 m5a's or 3 panthers (for a fixed setup). the M6A's and the combine have the exact same fire rate, so i tried combining the M5A's with the combine on the hornet, and its almost the same fire rate, but the M5A's seem to be slightly faster. However with the 3x Panthers you can saturate the target and overload the shields, and anytime you get a good shot with the combine fire a few rounds of HE into them and it ruins peoples days. If you prefer faster fire rates, the revenant isnt a bad gun but overheats quickly, pair that with the 3x Panthers or 3x Mantis's and you can still ruins peoples days, just with less explosions (boring!) Also, if you have a connie already, the M6A also fits on the flashfire mount for the hornet

I've been testing out the broadswords recently. Liking them. Never thought I'd be a ballistics guys. I'm going to try out the sledges though. I like @Shadow Reaper's thoughts on it.

SC appears to be set up very similarly to the way Mechwarrior and before it, Battltech, were designed. In fact many of the weapons are the same. Energy weapons have the benefit that they never run out of ammo, so if you're flying into missions like deep penetration, where you don't know you can escape quickly whenever called for, that is a reason to wear lasers. I liked not worrying about ammo to the point I eventually went all lasers for most missions, but my Mech was medium-slow and could not simply run away whenever it liked.

OTOH, ballistics hit harder than lasers, often fly faster, and have the best range. It's worth finding out if people can zoom and hit at 3-7 km range with a fast projectile. If so, and especially if weapons lock ranges are limited to less than what you can hit at, ballistics can be amazing.

I would just note too, I ran an Awesome back in Battletech 25 years ago. It has three PPC's, which I think is what the VNCL Blade Plasma Cannon is supposed to be. They fire slow bolts, have relatively short range, take a long time to charge (can't leave unpowered for surprises) and overheat if used to fire constantly, but they do fully 6X the damage of the 3MA. I want to hear how these things work in battle. Can you imagine 4 of them on the nose of a Vanguard? You might not use them often, but when you did your enemy would really regret it.

You can rent ships for Electronic Access (Arena Commander).
You can earn REC in racing, Vanduul Swarm or the other public matches.
From what I understand, racing is the highest REC/hour, as the matches are quick.
I suck at racing.
When I was renting a lot of weapons and ships I was flying 2-10 VS a day. I was not only learning combat flying but also learning the different ship handling. As a side effect I earned quite a lot of REC on top of the monthly subscriber REC allotment.
I have and still do rent a Vanduul Glaive on a permanent basis, although I can only fly it (laughably) in AC now.
I just like the ship that much :p

Re Big fighter vs small fighter: Size matters, but it's not everything. Face me in a SH or MzHartz in a m50... you'd better square off with me! :) Edit: She'd totally rek you, and I don't care what you're flying. Same with Erik McKetten in an Aurora... you think you can pwn him? LOL, go for it :-)

OTOH, in my fast little 350r with triple badgers, I have consistently owned SH of average or less skill.
I believe it really is a combination of personal skill and finding a ship that suits you.

When we get the shoulder-mounted railguns... there will be people on Dragonflies rekking Sabres... Not many, but there will be that one or two aces that just really dig the space knight joust.

Before the Glaive turned into a slip n slide, when REC'd ships were still in the PU, I really dug the shotgun to the face style of the Glaive. My attitude changed, my flying style changed even my voice deepened a bit. I just *felt* like violence on a long leash. Those s5 Wraith cannons were awesome if you were accurate and if you budgeted your shots.

One of my early post-release goals is to salvage, repair & hotrod a Glaive.
This will be the primary escort of my Speedshop Crucible.
The Glaive will be named Moaning Lisa and the Crucible is named Moaning Lisa Overdrive.

So I'm quickly finding that my Gladius has shields worthy of being called wet paper bag. What would be a good ship to change it to? I keep hearing Sabre... but I can't get a sabre from the store atm. Need a good fighter variant. Thoughts?
The Gladius is a fine ship, think the trouble may be between the seat and the controller. ;)

That's quite possible. Been a while since I've done much flight sim. And SC is a different beast than most.

That being said, I went subscriber and was flying the Sabre around. Definitely had less trouble strafing out of the way of the ramming pirates than with my Gladius. And took them out much faster. Also head to head against other players, I found I had more control and maneuverability.

I also found that my quality of flight combat had no difference between my keyboard/mouse and my Xbox One Elite controller. I actually thought I would fly better with my controller

Strafe isn't immediately, if you are strafing left and release strafe, it will take a while before your left strafe is gone. Boost will accelerate the change of direction.

And took them out much faster
How is that possible???? The Gladius with standard 2 CF007 gimballed and one Scorpion GT-215 (which is only effective at point blank) or the Sabre with 2 CF227 and 2 gimballed CF007 (?)
With optimized weapos: the Gladius with 2 fixed CF117 and 1 GT-215 vs the Sabre with 4 fixed CF227. The Gladius is a light fighter while the Sabre is a medium fighter ;)

I also found that my quality of flight combat had no difference between my keyboard/mouse and my Xbox One Elite controller.
You should try a descent flight stick, doesn't has to be an expensive one, the TM T.16000M or the T.Flight Hotas 4/X also work.
