No way is that reference 25 years old now :drunk:
It is not.
Remember that the Maschines keep Humanity endlessly looped in their "Golden Age"?
It might already have been centuries in reality.
In the bleak wasteland that once was Earth.
And in Zyon.
Where the last human programmers desperately strive to finish Star Citizen before it will forever be lost in Alpha....

If this is the golden age... I'm not sure the 90's were pretty rad.

It comes to us all eventually, I like my old shizz. Total Annihilation, Interstate '76, Transport Tycoon, that game I can't remember the name of or find hide not hair of that featured solar powered jet engined fighter planes...

...yes, the 90's, late 90's in particular, were pretty sweet. Let's call it the Win 95 era.

Hell yeah brother! Those were awesome games, and still are. I regularly play openTTD still (opensourced remake of transport tycoon deluxe, free on steam), it's a masterpiece.
There's a spiritual successor/remake to TA as well called Beyond All Reason, it's great.
Also Tomb Raider 1-3 still holds up, I heard the remakes work real well too although I've only played the originals in the last 2-3 years.
Let's not forget Warcraft 2, Starcraft, Quake and so many others, it truly was a golden age of gaming.

That is a memory the machines planted in your head. The 90s never truely existed!

Well if ya gotta go down Golden Memory Avenue then please remember how we ended up right here in the first place.
Two words:
Wing Commander
That's how the 90s kicked off.
(Or would have IF they ever existed...)

Easy answer: too many words, not enough content.
Since I am aware of my shortcomings I'll overlook your overlooking.
Besides, you mentioned Wing Commander.
That can't be a bad thing. Right?
PS: I made it run on a NEAT Board with a 20Mhz x268 and 1 MB RAM and a 40 MB HDD.
Drivers => High Memory.
Those were the days... :-P

amen to the 20 Mhz '286, that was the spec of the first PC I built. But I splurged on a second Mb of ram and an 80 Mb HDD. When I discovered Wing Commander I added a 320x480 Hercules graphic card with an extra serial port for a Logitec joystick. Wireframe Hotness!

You lads all got the nail on the head; Wing Commander was gold. Good lord, playing on the ol' 386. Damn that was a slick machine. Lol.

I also have the fondest memories of X-Wing, Tie Fighter, the Dark Forces games, and one that I played the shit out of; Betrayal at Krondor.

Some very defining games for this lad.

But Freelancer Privateer and Privateer II, boy - the feeling of Freelancer the Privateer games. The feeling that game gave me - that's something that I haven't felt since. I'm hoping Christ Roberts can recapture that.

In the full spirit of this thread, I will continue to ignore all of your posts but simply comment to myself that the 286 is the best damn PC a teenager in the 90's could ever ask for (god i miss the sound of dial up) and that x-wing and freelancer were by far the best space sim games ever made according to my aged memory.

Correction to my own message - In talking to @Hybus last night, I came to the very stark realization (read: Hybus said - what about "Privateer?") that is was Privateer and Privateer II that first elicited the feeling I'm looking to recapture in SC. Freelancer was simply the last game that gave that sorta feeling. I can't believe that my addled brain forgot that when I was typing up this original message. Derp. :wut:
