When I spoke to staff on site about the Kraken they called it a civilian Idris. I'd expect it to be cheaper and have generally lesser stats. They said there would be no roll the Kraken would fill that an Idris didnt do better.

So it should be cheaper to operate and maintain in theory.

Given it has a smaller crew size I can see that. Also the Idris is able to protect its fleet inside the ship where the Kraken ships are exposed on the landing pads as well as pilots running to their ships. Still not sure how a ship goes from the landing pad to the internal hanger space or if it has a different entrance.

Something to remember with the Kraken --> according to 5 year old lore, a lot of the single seat ships have a Quantum drive, but do NOT have a Jump drive, at least initially -- you have to buy one and install it later.

So a lot of people with fancy pants fighters may be able to hop around inside a system, BUT, will not be able to do jumps to other star systems.

The Kraken will be the easiest way to get a fighter wing from star system A to star system B, and provide cover for the bigger ships. So, it definitely serves an important niche.
This is why the Aurora LX is in my lineup... when I unmelt it again...

Given how real world carriers work it could be part of a Carrier Group with multiple escort ships that can help defend it. Or in a more planned scenario it could keep well clear of the combat zone and launch it's fighters and act as a forward resupply point.

If any of you have access to the PTU, I will be glad to meet up with you to test out some of the newer ships. All the ones that came out this patch are ones that I own. I would love to give the hammerhead a real workout both in offensive anti-piracy operations, and defensive in escort ops.

I also have the Phoenix and most of the mustangs.

Ideally, we have someone with a Phoenix carry around Montoya as a VIP (he can help run turrets or an engineering station), have a Hammerhead escort, and then have a bunch of mustangs or other ships (maybe a Valkyrie too) come try and take them down.

Or have a Hammerhead come in and attack a convoy of other ships (pirates/merchants/whatever) with fighter escorts and see what happens (from early reports, the HH might be a bit light on armor/shields in early builds)

Then we can all go to SPK and take on the AIs there.

We can also schedule this for when 3.3 PTU goes live to everyone.

Be aware, there is at least one CTD bug that is plaguing my computer right now. Working on finding out what it is, but I suspect it's a GPU error.

it depends how the ship is being used.

If the Carrier is part of a major battle group, then yes, you will need escorts like the Hammerhead and the Polaris. But it may also be the home base acting as protection/repair/refuel for a major exploration push too. In either case, the ships around it would be explorers and you would only expect minor opposition. The ships shown in the video were not part of a capital group, but one of raiding fighters.

The possibilities are going to be fun with the ground game being crafted.

We have Prowlers with their stealth for first strike.
We have the Retaliator, Vanguard Hoplite and now the Valkyrie to bring in troops while possibly under fire. Could easily be picking up fresh soldiers from the LZ and flying them into the fight and flying out the wounded for treatment by an Apollo (while the Apollo is well armored and could pick up its own fallen troops why risk it) or up to the fleet and treated at an Endeavor.
We have the Hercules C2 and M2 to bring in mass amounts of troops and support vehicles to an LZ that might be a little back from the front line followed by the Genesis Starliner bringing in troops to a staging area be it a secure LZ planet side or with the fleet in orbit.

Then there is the Hercules A2 and Redeemer providing close air support. The Valkyrie can also provide some close air support but its going to need to trade off ferrying around troops and Cyclones and sticking around to provide air support.

I am still attempting to figure out the fleet. How to get cargo, ships and personal to the staging area especially if its in space.

From what I have seen, the small ships can fit into the internal hangar from their landing pads, they more or less roll in. The medium ships landing pads are elevators that can lift the ships in and out of the internal hangar.

All ships would have to fit into the internal hangar as going to QD and Jumps would destroy them sitting on the flight deck.

My opinion on the Kraken is, if you want a pocket carrier, now you have one choice. N'uff said.

I think it is too early to have an opinion on the Valkyrie. We need to know about speed and how much a hit it can take. In general, I think the idea of a large target, slow dropship with lots of guns is looking for trouble. Assault transports don't need to be armed for their central role. If you're outside that role, then guns are always good, but IMHO, faster, or stealthier, are generally better options. So I hesitate to see this is an improvement over the Hoplite. Not sure if it's better than the Reclaimer since we don't have specs. Very different philosophy than the Prowler.

I love stealth, so I am planning on putting out the pesos for a Prowler. This has not won me over yet. Certainly don't need both, and the Prowler is more my style.

There's no doubt it is a very cool ship. For looks I certainly would choose it over the Hoplite, the Reclaimer, the Redeemer and the Prowler. It is that purtiful. Don't plan to fly it alone though, as you would be looking to get everyone aboard dead very quickly. I can't believe they will make this nimble enough to avoid missiles and torps. This is a prime target for an Eclipse S5 torp. I'm guessing you'd need only one, and it would about NEVER miss a target like this. When people see how much NPCs cost, they are going to be very hesitant to risk them in this bird. You can't buy insurance on NPCs. So my uninformed guess is, for speed use the Hoplite, for Stealth use the Prowler, and for big bird planetary landings, use a Polaris. The marines are worth the protection, IMHO.

Now if you can keep big guns off this thing, it is a master at ground force suppression. Check out the lower turret action, and imagine this thing hovering over enemies that can't hurt it. Very different approach from the fewer but bigger guns on the Prowler:

Montoya gets to be in the safest place in the whole fleet, on a Dragonfly in the Freelancer Hangar which is in the Kraken.

Interesting

From today's Chairman News

As another year’s CitizenCon drew to a close, we all walked away with new insight into the technology, engineering, and security that will define our future. This year’s primary sponsor, Drake Interplanetary, certainly didn’t miss the opportunity to reveal a surprise of their own with the Kraken.

Shortly after their presentation ended, a representative from Aegis’ Outreach Department contacted us and wanted us to pass along the following message to our members who own an Idris:

We would like to take this opportunity to reach out to you, the esteemed members of the Chairman’s Club, to assure you that while we were considerably amused by Drake Interplanetary’s inflammatory unveiling of their new carrier ship, the baseless claims made by their sales reps and advertisements violate several Imperial broadcast standards. As such, we’ve expressed our concerns to the New Formats & Standards Commission of the UEE, who have decided to look into the matter.

While we at Aegis welcome adversity in the spirit of competition, Drake’s actions are flagrant misrepresentations of our products and we have worked hard to keep our tradition untarnished.

Honestly, nothing peeked my interest. Well, the Kraken did, but .. dat price tag. I got a new PS4 Pro and a whole bunch of games for it for less than that price (Red Dead Redemption 2 here I come!) I'm happy with a Titan and a Cutlass (and an Aurora ofcourse..). Honestly, nothing beats the Cutlass in my eyes. I've flown all the ships in recent PTUs and I keep coming back to that ship time and time again.

I do agree that we need starters from all manufacturers. I wanna go all Drake. And if they do a Connie equivalent - now that is something I am surely forking over for.

Although... The Freelancer MAX with them quad engines, boy! Gotta have me some of that!
