2.6 Aurora LN is probably the best starter ship.

Nope, not a problem at all, I just flew a sortie VS together with a Hornet.... The LN was outfitted with 2 Badgers and 2 Longswords, the same as I currently use on my Delta. The stock missiles are good!!!!, 2 are enough to kill an ace. I came to wave 17 with my first LN. After all Vanduuls were destroyed, I had to suicide against a asteroid. Wave 17 had stripped my left side, I couldn't manoeuvre anymore. After wave 17 I had something around 95k points, the Hornet 25k? I lost my first LN, the Hornet was at 3 or 4.... not sure, I forgot to take a screenshot. Wave 18 got me with its damn missiles. The Hornet was killed very fast in wave 18, so I had to handle the Vanduuls alone, was too much for the LN :head_bandage:

I really must work hard with strafe, roll and pitch to get a aim at a Vanduul when it is close, but once in the crosshair, the Badgers and Longswords work good together. Difference in pip don't matter on really close range.
Maybe it is just me, but when picking up ammunition, I never got a count, repair and fuel worked normal. It almost seems like the ammo on the Longswords is unlimited right now.

The LN never flighted so good before. The speed reduction in 2.6 is very positive for the LN.
Ok, when I need a Wingman or Escort, I'm putting a call to you. You are a far better analyst of flight mechanics then I'll ever be.

I agree with @BUTUZ and @ZombieXII. I will rent a LN and try it out, I don't want to bug my precious LN.
I rented 1x LN, 1x J-Span Cryo-Star Cooler, 1x Wen/Cassel Endo Cooler, 1x A&R Overdrive Power Plant, 1x Aegis Regulus Power Plant.
  1. I tested the LN stock, everything OK
  2. I replaced the coolers and tested the LN, everything OK
  3. I replaced the power plants, everything OK
Maybe you replaced the coolers and or power plants with coolers and power plants from your other ships. Try to mount the original coolers and power plants or rent some and mount them.

As far as I know none of these components actually make a difference in game.
I actually was surprised. With the stock coolers and power plants I could fire the Bulldog and M3A together approximately 65 M3A shots, before both were overheated. The Bulldog faster than the M3A, but it took much longer before the Bulldog overheated then I remembered from previous PU versions.
With the rented coolers I could fire the Bulldog and M3A together approximately 45 M3A shots, before also the M3A got overheated.
With the rented coolers and the rented power plants I could fire the Bulldog and M3A together approximately 55 M3A shots, before also the M3A got overheated.

Powerplant and cooler matter in 2.6. Now I must also check IR and EM while firing, cooldown time, shooting during standstill and shooting during full strafe / throttle / boost. This will take a while. I only will TEST difference between stock and rented. That also gives me some insight on how good the stock coolers and powerplant perform

It is a matter of practice. First I tried to learn to become a better dogfighter by studying http://imperialnews.network/lis/, but theory and practice were too far away for me. It was a good site to teach me the importance of good controls, but I even felt asleep when watching the vids. So I started to fight NPC with my "inferior" fighters. While fighting I learned evasion with strafe, boost and afterburner. @Blind Owl and @Shadow Reaper convinced me to put my learned knowledge on the forum. That is how https://testsquadron.com/threads/combat-fighter.7839/ started. But that also forced me to think about what the hell I was doing while dogfighting. This reversed in actually dog fighting with a plan instead of just jump in the swarm and fight my way out ... or die. Using tactics was born instead of just using skills.
I still am not a super dogfighter, the TEST tournament with actual PvP fighting learned me that lesson. Other people have a better aim than I ever will have. My rig was broke so I had to fight on a slow laptop, but still it teached me some respect for other fighters, I won't hide behind my bad hardware at that tournament. Another thing I learned at that tournament is that weapons matter, so since the tournament I tried other weapons.
Now I eagerly try to find a way to do team fighting. I'm a lone wolf, but the power of the pac is greater than the power of all individuals added together.

TLDR: I'm not the best fighter around, but I try and practice to be a good one and it would be a honor for me to be your wingman or escort.

just upgraded last week to LN. wouldn't mind a shield upgrade though, those PU pirates have been blowing me to bits since 2.6 launched!
the Hornet's shields can be fitted to the Aurora, I'm told, for that extra tanky goodness

also no one has mentioned the LN's chief distinction - a patent leather pilot seat

patent leather!

The pirates are more agile than the LN. I had to fight hard with my controls not to be outturned by the Vanduul. The Gladius is just more agile than the Vanduul and the LN. The 350R can use its max speed to its advantage against the LN. The big advantage of the LN is its slow speed, sounds odd. I tried a Gladius in PU against the Pirates. Pirate Gladius are dog meat, Sabres are dog meat, 350R are too fast and not so agile, Auroras are too slow. With the Gladius I overshoot both. For the Aurora I must use half throttle to kill it, which destroys my speed advantage, sitting duck, so I can only engage Auroras when the more agile ships like the Gladius and 350R are gone.

I logged into arena commander. I was unable to target anyone. After about 30 secs, I lost almost complete control of my ship. I was just floating along, spinning, able only to shoot my repeaters at nothing in particular. I didn't turn anything off. I didn't push buttons outside of shooting repeaters and maneuvering my ship.
If the power plant is broken, than you can't manoeuvre and can't use your repeaters. If the coolers are broken, than you overheat without doing anything, shooting accelerates the process and you can't shoot anymore when overheated.
During my TESTs I noticed a difference between power plants in EM, butt I busted my 3rd pair of power plants. The coolers didn't had any effect on the overheating nor IR. I guess I broke something there, the rented LN and/or the coolers. At least I expected was that the IR would be reduced, but zip. IR and M3A-shots-before-overheat stayed the same. I even rented a few ES to hold broken equipment.

The strategy I use when caught in a dance I can't win with the vanduul is I boost away from them for a couple seconds, then turn and charge back in. Just keep doing that and blast away as you charge back in.

I had to do that in wave 18, alone against the aces, the missiles got me before I could finish it :head_bandage:

So in this instance, having a slower ship can be an advantage?

This is the only way I could survive in VS when I used my LN. The ol' run away and get them to chase you. For me this led to the Vandul seperating from each other and allowing me to dance one on one. Sometimes it works.

If the ratio speed / turn is good. Slow means that your G-SAFE doesn't has to kick in so hard.

As long as they separate, it works fine.

Just thought I'd mention - helped moonshiner out tonight with the old pirate swarm. He chose a vanguard, I decided to be a REAL test member and chose Aurora LN. We both got our caterpillar skins - just sayin' :D
