I set out in the PU to try to find some GT215 Scorpions to glue to my Ghost. Due to changing circumstances (have a family now) I had got up early (5am) and estimated I had a minimum of an hour to play with more if I was lucky.

I grabbed an Aurora MR, as I have made the mistake of taking the ship I intend to modify out previously, and first checked Dumpers in Olisar... they had the veri-pucks I was looking for but not the guns, so Quantum'd over to CRU1 and had a look in Platinum but no weapons at all from that supplier, fair enough. Decided to try over at Levski and, man, 18 million km never seemed so far.

While in QD I chatted on the F12 comms and was informed the GT's were over at Area 18 where someone had just seen them, and also discovered @LoicFarris was on too and joined his group. I have a destination! Killed my Quantum travel without reaching Levski, turned back and it occurred to me about 30 minutes had gone and I had spent the majority of my play session in Quantum with nothing so far really accomplished.

Got back to Olisar and swapped out for the Starfarer to be able to actually get places relatively quickly. Set out for Hurston where the group was to check in and then continue on to Area 18.

I get within 125,000km of Hurston I can see the planet and a moon in the distance and pirates intercept. I open up with the 'Farers 4 mighty Combine canons and the shots pass right through the Buccaneers and Cutlass without detonating, clear hits and even registering as hits on the Pip but no damage to the foe, firing until the guns overheated I tried multiple targets the most I got was a wing off one Buc... gah, time to run. The shields were tanking the damage fine it but some shots seemed to be getting through from the amount of sparks animations I was seeing in the cockpit and at this point I didn't want to die and the travel time to be worthless... Hit B... the QD now refuses to work. A lot of hitting B like I was sending a distress signal by morse code later and finally got it to kick back in, spooled up and jumped... and moments later interdicted with just 89,000km to go, planet still in the distance hanging there tantalizingly close. I came to the conclusion this wasn't a simple pirate loot grab this was some kind of organized blockade. How many more stops? 50,000km to go? 25,000km to go?

I can hear movement in the rest of the house and realise, yes, the hour is up. Backspace, self destruct, wake up where I started on Olisar.

Sorry I didn't get to join the group Loic, maybe next time!

On this occasion I was in quantum for the majority of the session which didn't feel like it was anywhere near the best use of my limited time. Thinking about it I have not left Crusader space in the last few patches so my rarefied time to play and perhaps even my play style doesn't seem to match SC as it expands and sprawls...

So I am left wondering to myself - is it the journey that makes the adventure, or the destination?

I think there will be more pilot orientated players who feel the adventure starts when the ship lifts off the pad and will relish the challenges encountered in flight perhaps even feeling cheated in an uneventful trip to a destination, whereas other players may feel more FPS orientated and that the journey to the destination is an obstacle to be passed as quickly as possible, the destination being the start of the adventure... I also think that opinion from one to the other could change depending on how much spare time a player has on their hands at any one time...

Thoughts?

@NaffNaffBobFace 1. Turn your engines off to exit the QJ.
2. Exit game from the bed.
3. When you log back into the PU - say the next day ---- You will spawn back in the ship where it was when you logged out.
** This works 99% of the time. When you are in space. **
I hope this helps.
🍺
Thank you for the tip, that will definitely be helpful in future 🙂

What is your thinking in regard to play styles and a players requirements from their session? This time was a rarity for me as I was focused on FPS getting my shopping done and all flying and journeying was in the way of that. Usually when I'm out for a fly, landing and running inside a place or through a city is in the way and something to be done as quickly as possible.

Do we think that the game can balance this successfully and avoid having players rage-quit as they just missed the train and have to watch the counter tick down from 160 or get bored in Quantum and go find something more interesting to do?

Perhaps what I have felt is specific just to my time constraints and most people won't experience this?

First, you are not alone. many people have RL constraints.

something to be done as quickly as possible.
With your description, I must say that SC is really not a game as such. It is, and has always been, intended to be a Virtual Reality experience.
CR has always wanted realism (with fun game play) but SC is not intended to be a quick 'task'.
Having said this, do not despair my friend.
Role play takes many different forms and SC by it's nature is Role play.
I often do different 'things' just for the fun & experience of it.
Sometimes a space trucker hehe Sometimes a rookie bounty hunter hehe Sometimes just a crew member for some TESTie friends.
The crew member bit can be fun as well.

My personal experience.....When a patch goes Live and is reset..... I first do a couple of simple delivery missions to make some credits.
Then I travel to Levski for a shopping trip.... If I log off or the game crashes I respawn back at Levski and finish my shopping.
You of course could try this at Lorville or Area 18.

If I am doing something that takes a long time and I need to do RL 'things' I just stop my ship IN SPACE and log out from the bed. Works for me.

Do we think that the game can balance this successfully
They have made and will continue to make 'adjustments' for this staying within the goals of SC.
An example of this several trains now run and the waiting time is shorter.
I truly hope that you can also make some adjustments and not rage quit.
Many changes will occur over the next 2 years... Please be patient my friend.

I feel your pain young man, but what an incredible journey your on:like:.
I was once a young kiddo with a rug monkey of my own that required more than less of me. Then one day my boy grew up all of a sudden like :wut: . My journey as Dad a/k/a house overlord was over and he was in college and on his own path. Enjoy the journey life throws at you and once in a while we will greet you with beers and open cargo bays whenever the rug rats allow:o7:

As @CosmicTrader said, there's a lot of us with time constraints and logging out in bed in space (not in atmo or on the ground though) does help a lot to achieve your goals. I think there is quiet a few backers who were the age of not having hard commitments when they backed all those years ago had no kids when they backed, but now they got like 2 hours to spare every week! It will be important for SC to cater to these ppl as well as those with 4+ hours playtime per day, to get thr most engagement and have a healthy player base. Currently it's kinda hard to get things done under an hour, but if you just want to make a quick buck and enjoy yourself, you can already do bounty missions which should take about 10-15 minutes from loading into the game to completion.
Older ppl with less time tend to have more money and that's why you will be able to buy UEC and get what you want with less time to spend. I think this method needs to be carefully balanced later, but it could work.
As for those like me who have little time and even less money to spend on a game, it's the long road ahead. With persistence of stuff earned and stable login-logout-login at the same place, it will get more enjoyable.
Being in a Corp as big as test should help out as well, you will probably find someone who can lend you a ship or help out if needed, even for a short half-hour session, so you can achieve your goals.
I'm yet to see what the generic gameloop playtime is aiming for in SC, too many things are broken. Sometimes a 5minute mission takes 50, sometimes it works in 5.
My hope is that we get more short missions (like bounties or box cleanup missions) that are really close by and take 5-10 minutes, and more payout for the longer ones that require 30+ minutes that can take up to 1-2 hours due to unforseen circumstances. But, keep in mind that there should be risk with reward, otherwise it will feel meaningless! The risk of running a long mission can be that it takes even longer, but the reward should be worth it anyways.

Tldr.: when we get persistence of stuff earned, the perceived value of time spent in game will change significantly. More short missions should be introduced as a huge chunk of backers are getting older as the game takes years to finish, thus have less time, and the missions and gameplay loops should reflect that. Things will change, just wait and see. Also, don't forget that you can logout in space in a bed and it works!

There is a reason the Vanguard line is my go to ship. Less quantum travel time, less fueling and less issues with pirates. In fact it is why I am considering two of them. :)

My Retaliator is for flying with friends and my Avenger is for the local stuff either at start or once I get there. :)

Fortunately there are plans to be able to do things while in Quantum. There are also plans for commercial travel. Board a ship, log out, log back in and you are at your destination.

Unfortunately, travel time is going to get longer not shorter. For example Delamar, with Levski, is going to be in the Nyx system, which is on the other side of the Pyro system.

Now, to save time, there appears to be a bug. Once you get into quantum, get out of your seat, presuming you are not in a single seat fighter, and get back in once you reach your destination. No interdiction. Pushing the exit seat shortcut in a Gladius, while in Quantum, is a bad idea. :)

Many thanks for the reassurance everyone, especially in regards to the new arrival. Kidda is my top priority and I know this won't last forever and I think I'd be an idiot to prioritise an Alpha video game over the first years of their life 🙂 First world problems, eh? Can't deny I am definately one of those people who had plenty of time when I first pledged and no time now.

I'm pretty sure at some point in the future Baby 'BobFace will find all my posts on here and read them, so just for their future reassurance this post was more for people who don't have much time to play rather than me not having much time to play and how CIG can hope to retain that audience 😉

Aha, many thanks for the seat tip and the additional information. I think it's going to be worth my while logging in in the morning, booking a ticket to X for a few thousand UEC and logging in when I get in from work in the evening and doing whatever I need to and then getting a ticket back to base and be there by next morning.

What everybody else said... and one more thing... the adventure starts when you get out of bed, wherever that may be.

If you need a ride out of Oli just let me know, I have a reasonably good track recording of landing these days... unless it's a Starfarer vs. an invisible barrier in Area 18.

Two more tips I have found helpful.
If you are interdicted as soon as you hit normal space, hit F2, set your route and hit F1. This facilitates running away.

If you are interdicted at less than, about, a million km from Arc Corp or Hurston, it will not let you resume your trip unless you jump to somewhere else first. That is an annoying bug.

CIG has two choices

1. give players things to do in Quantum that are as engaging as the gameplay that awaits at their destination, or

2. eliminate the long travel times

we signed up to do stuff in the PU, not to go AFK during Quantum or play mini-games in our space ships

so the sensible choice is #2

when there is a conflict between 'realism' and good game play, game play needs to win

Eve Online's devs implemented clone jumping (instantaneous transfer of consciousness between two bodies) in response to player complaints about long travel times

we don't want /can't afford to instantiate a new character in every system where we want to do stuff

so CIG will have to come up with its own hand-wavium mechanic to deal with the issue

I would suggest set reasonable expectations for the amount of time you have available. I often stay away from Area 18 and Hurston as both of those can take half an hour just to get out of the planets range from logging into the game. I also tend not to travel from planet to planet (unless trading) when I am stuck with a short amount of time and pick up missions especially bounty/mercenary as they can be done quickish and you don't risk losing any sort of investment if you can't complete the trip. Finally, as much fun as it is to play with others typically if you have an hour or less to play it's often not worth a trip anywhere outside of the local system as coordinating a meeting spot picking a mission and then waiting on stragglers always seems to take an hour. Luckily just logging into discord and chatting can help to bring the social interaction even if doing different things.

Finally, outside of PVP most of the default layouts of ships are good enough against NPC's especially when half the hits are not even recognized by the server. For instance since the reset with 3.7.1 I have still not upgraded any of my ships, armor or even weapons and have simply been focused on increasing my aUEC or having fun playing through some of the missions. Finally, make sure to use your ship's bed to log out in space if not on a moon or space station. Even if a Starfarer can warp between Hurston and Port Olisar in 5 mins it still takes a good 10 mins just to get from the habitation to Hurston orbit and so with that, you've already burnt through 1/6th of your available time and haven't done a thing yet.

CIG has two choices

1. give players things to do in Quantum that are as engaging as the gameplay that awaits at their destination, or

2. eliminate the long travel times

They are strongly going for option 1. The long travel times are required to give meaning to trade routes that are required for other game loops like defense and pirating.

Last night I got scanned then tagged as having a stowaway who was a person of interest. The police opened fire to which I returned fire and left them as dust. Only to find out even without any ships around I was still QT blocked.

NaffNaffBobFace I know exacly what you mean... I don't have RL time-limits like you have but as an owner of just small ships (my go to ride is an Avenger) I now exactly how wasted the time for long QT feels.
Here a some advice for limit that time:

Use the right ship: if you have a medium size ship that have a goo QT speed without beeing a brick use that for long travel, if not, now you can rant it, so go and pick one for one day, just for the time to get there and came back.

Plan the trip in advance: if you are looking for a specific component and you don't know where to find it ask around: in-game chat, discord this very same forum, I'm sure there will be some one that ca provide the information you are looking at (for the GT scorprion series I'll be able to provide that myself...)

Get notes: I'm looking to a coverd-ops/stealth game play so I'm testing different configuration for my Avenger, both as components and weapons options, so every time i find some component or weapon I find interesting I write it down on my scrap paper note.
After a the first pass, at every patch I don't need to re-look around for every component that I whant, I just look at my notes and I know thet the Vapoer Block (B-grade stelath cooler) is at G-Ex, untill they have messed around with the shops inventory.
Also, if you run around station for refuelleing and repair during mission spend a couple of minute to looks at the shops inventory and note down if there are some items that you are interested in.

Final note: do not expect that the QT time will be reduced in the future: quite the opposite actually, they will expand the systems amking long travel longer.
That will be the reason for travel services: do you prefer to spend 30' in QT or pay 2k UAC to that guy with the StarLiner to get you there in half of the time???

Maybe 20 km is too much, but it reduces the double interdiction's. Before the 20 km rule I got interdicted by security forces, I was cleared to go, I immediately QT away and got immediately interdicted by pirates. When going into quantum again, I always take care that I fly at SCM speed, otherwise I can't halt fast enough when security forces interdict me.

Many thanks for all the tips everyone, got up at 5am again this morning and the events unfolded as follows:

Spawn a Starfarer immediately and book it to ArcCorp. Get intercepted once, burn past the pirates until I lose them on target lock, spool up the QD again no problems and burn it the rest of the way. QD round the planet to Area 18.

Coming in to land I don't want to plough into the scenery so keep it at SCM, which in the Starfarer is a paltry 85meters per second (my converter says that's 190mph... not sure if that's correct...)

A dude comes on the F12 comms saying he's looking for friends around ArcCorp. Responses from others are "yeah heared that one before troll" and I hit 3, yes he's red, on the ground otherwise not moving. I get clearance to land and this dude shoots up into the sky like he's headed for orbit from out of a hangar, it's a Gladius so not one of the free-fly ships and less likely to be someone stirring up grief... I'm lining up on the hangar when I notice the distance reading on him is getting less, not more, and i'm rammed. It's an Armistice zone so I take no damage but the pig-ass bastard that is the Starfarer barrels toward the Death Grid like a fat man that sat down too fast. I catch it in time thinking if Hover Mode was still in place I'd have been spread to the four winds, am rammed again but am prepared this time and the ship bucks but stays relatively in control.

I gain height to just over 1000 feet, he rams me again, I get on the comms and declare "emergency emergency" and "One point has been removed from your license" because I like my Si-Fi movies:

View: https://youtu.be/nCaomvjPIok?t=362

He comes in again and... vanishes. Not sure if he was removed to another server, if they have a Gank system that removes assholes or if he had a 30,000 error crash to desktop but he was gone and I could land unmolested. I'd have been supersalty if I'd spent that time getting there and been knocked out of the sky buy a buttock.

So I get on the ground, run through the spaceport as fast as I can, see the bus just leaving as I come round the corner, wait 62 seconds for the next one, ride it to Area 18, run to ArcCorp tower and to the red door to get to CenterMass...

It won't open. Gawd damn why isn't this unassuming otherwise anonymous red door opening? I ALT-Tab and open a browser, search and find a youtube video and it's a damned lift. I look down and there is the button. For crying out loud. Grab the lift ride it to the floor, get in CenterMass and my mission is nearly at an end!

I look around with a sense of mild satisfaction, breath in the atmosphere then ignore all the shelf items and go direct to the terminal. Beep Boop I now have my pair of GT215's. I turn and hit the Mobiglas to fit them to the Hornet Ghost...

It's locked. It's locked because it's spawned and stored at Olisar. O_o

I run back to the lift, jam it back to the lobby, run through Area 18, round the corner to see the bus leaving and have to wait another 62 seconds, ride back to the spaceport where I grab a Vanguard rather than the Starfarer as it'd take twenty minutes to haul that tubs arse out of the gravity well.

The QD trip back to Olisar was without any interdiction at all, and I touch down on the pad, go inside and using the Mobiglas attach the guns to the ghost.

Mission accomplished, in all took 70 minutes so call it a round hour without the griefer and no other distractions like watching the youtube video of a lift.

Again many thanks for all tips, really helpful and invaluable in retaining my sanity. No one had woken up yet, so I went for a solo session in Vandu'ul Swarm only to find the loadouts from the PU no longer populate in to AC and you have to rent the parts instead - which is why I went to ArcCorp for the GT's in the first place...

Great story, thanks for sharing!
That griefer hopefully CTD-d like he deserves lol. Also it nice to see that the ramming physics are starting to work, and you didn't get thrown into an orbit from the relatively small weight of a fighter.
+1 for the reference lol
Wait what now? The mods u make in PU don't carry over to AC? That's new to me! And not a welcome change to be honest, it doesn't make much sense unless they wanna boost sub sales like this, which would be a new low for the marketing team.... I'm hoping it's just a bug.

Anyways, fams asleep, times a wastin, gonna try and find the dude lost in some caves for the 3rd bloody time.
Talking of caves, I'd recommend you don't try to accomplish anything by going to one apart from just sightseeing and if you are lucky, some mining, cos it can take ages to navigate one if you get lost. First time I got out fine, but last time I went in and tried to find a way out, only to realize that there is no way for me to get back to where I come from. There was no rocks I could climb and basically got stuck exploring the same 3-4 "rooms". I think it was Aberdeen cave. Annoying experience, 2 hours wasted for literally nothing.

I remember previously when it did port across it didn't work great as if my ship was destroyed or stored at a destination like Olisar in the PU I couldn't use it in AC... hopefully this break from PU to AC means one will not effect the other so hard. I used to avoid flying my favorite ship in the PU just so I could enjoy it in AC 🙂 I think the split is more to do with unintended consequences of one effecting the other...?

It also gives a bit of a point back to using REC. 200REC for a hornet s4 center mount for 3 days isn't enough to cripple someone making a custom loadout... now if only anyone played AC still I'd be able to earn for REC to keep renting that garbage!

You can still move the components you have about your fleet if you'd got an Avenger for the Suckerpunches you're still in luck, it's just the gear you get in the PU you can't use.
