I set out in the PU to try to find some GT215 Scorpions to glue to my Ghost. Due to changing circumstances (have a family now) I had got up early (5am) and estimated I had a minimum of an hour to play with more if I was lucky.
I grabbed an Aurora MR, as I have made the mistake of taking the ship I intend to modify out previously, and first checked Dumpers in Olisar... they had the veri-pucks I was looking for but not the guns, so Quantum'd over to CRU1 and had a look in Platinum but no weapons at all from that supplier, fair enough. Decided to try over at Levski and, man, 18 million km never seemed so far.
While in QD I chatted on the F12 comms and was informed the GT's were over at Area 18 where someone had just seen them, and also discovered @LoicFarris was on too and joined his group. I have a destination! Killed my Quantum travel without reaching Levski, turned back and it occurred to me about 30 minutes had gone and I had spent the majority of my play session in Quantum with nothing so far really accomplished.
Got back to Olisar and swapped out for the Starfarer to be able to actually get places relatively quickly. Set out for Hurston where the group was to check in and then continue on to Area 18.
I get within 125,000km of Hurston I can see the planet and a moon in the distance and pirates intercept. I open up with the 'Farers 4 mighty Combine canons and the shots pass right through the Buccaneers and Cutlass without detonating, clear hits and even registering as hits on the Pip but no damage to the foe, firing until the guns overheated I tried multiple targets the most I got was a wing off one Buc... gah, time to run. The shields were tanking the damage fine it but some shots seemed to be getting through from the amount of sparks animations I was seeing in the cockpit and at this point I didn't want to die and the travel time to be worthless... Hit B... the QD now refuses to work. A lot of hitting B like I was sending a distress signal by morse code later and finally got it to kick back in, spooled up and jumped... and moments later interdicted with just 89,000km to go, planet still in the distance hanging there tantalizingly close. I came to the conclusion this wasn't a simple pirate loot grab this was some kind of organized blockade. How many more stops? 50,000km to go? 25,000km to go?
I can hear movement in the rest of the house and realise, yes, the hour is up. Backspace, self destruct, wake up where I started on Olisar.
Sorry I didn't get to join the group Loic, maybe next time!
On this occasion I was in quantum for the majority of the session which didn't feel like it was anywhere near the best use of my limited time. Thinking about it I have not left Crusader space in the last few patches so my rarefied time to play and perhaps even my play style doesn't seem to match SC as it expands and sprawls...
So I am left wondering to myself - is it the journey that makes the adventure, or the destination?
I think there will be more pilot orientated players who feel the adventure starts when the ship lifts off the pad and will relish the challenges encountered in flight perhaps even feeling cheated in an uneventful trip to a destination, whereas other players may feel more FPS orientated and that the journey to the destination is an obstacle to be passed as quickly as possible, the destination being the start of the adventure... I also think that opinion from one to the other could change depending on how much spare time a player has on their hands at any one time...
