So I completely skipped the 2000 series cards. I didn't see enough of a performance increase to warrant the upgrade. Sure, it had ray tracing, but my 1080 has been doing plenty good enough and those d*mn bit coin farmers have been running the price up way too high for me to justify the purchase.

But now there's the 3000 series and I'm finally jumping in. I just know buying one is going to be a sh!tshow though on release. It'll be a race to get one before the farmers and scalpers buy them out. So I've been trying to get all the info and rumors I can leading into it. So far:

  • RTX 3080 is going on sale 9/17/2020 (allegedly at 6am Pacific time)
  • RTX 3090 is going on sale 9/24/2020
  • RTX 3070 is going on sale 10/15/2020
  • Nvidia has a "notify me" sign up for email notifications when they are available
  • Best Buy will have some 3080 stock arriving on the 16th (rumor)
  • Newegg had some Asus 3080s in stock for about 20 minutes on the 9th (rumor)
  • B&H had them available for preorder for short time (rumor and might have been a listing mistake)

That's all I have found. Anyone hear anything else?

Yep... I am going to wait it out until the beginning of October. Remember ASUS on other manufacturers/modifiers have preference. I am with you, I skipped the 20 series too as I make a habit to skip generations - $600 $700 dollars is a lot of money. Granted, it is not always cheaper to buy legacy equipment - I doubt you'll see a significant decrease in cost on the 10x series. Remember the development is exponential... and Moore's law applies, especially to hardware (1024, 2048, 4096, etc)... look at the cuda cores for the past since the 280 (240 Cores) to 1080 (2560 Cores) to the 3080 (8704 cores). Each generation from here will be more drastic than the other. I can't wait for the 50x (32k in cores) - 60x series (64k in cores) series and beyond :)

My birthday is 9/17...just saying.

I saw a chart with projected stats of cards like that and skipped the 20 series as well. I still have a 980ti, but I knew the 2080 wasn't what I wanted.

It looks like Provantage.com has some listed. It's the Gigabyte RTX 3080 Eagle OC and it's listed for $723.65. It does show "special order" and says that it could take 3-4 weeks for delivery, but it doesn't show sold out like the other Zotac cards they have listed. Looking around online and in forums, there is some doubt as to their ability to fulfill the orders they are taking. The page is here: (Provantage)

There is also this page (HERE) that's updated every 5min or so. It looks pretty accurate on tracking availability so far.

EDIT: looks like preorders are actually going up, kind of. The scalpers are taking preorders for the RTX 3080 FE for $1,200 on ebay. This is why we can't have nice things...

Well, that was a joke... The "release" at 6am pst was pretty much non existent. The Nvidia site hiccuped, but I never saw anything other than "notify me". Best Buy sold out before anything could leave the cart. B&H as well as Newegg broke. Their sites became unresponsive for about 15 minutes and were all sold out when they finally came back on. Amazon went straight to "sold out" as well.

So, basically everything sold out instantaneously. Every site, every model, every single card is gone. It looks like the scalpers win again. Ebay has tons of them up for sale at $1,200 to $1,600...

I had the same experience.

They need to change the way this happens. It's always the same deal. I would bet that there is some back room deal where a few people come in and buy all available stock even before the things are released. It makes no sense.

Happy Birthday, @Grimbli 🍻
Yeah, all 3080s are already sold out. I can pre-order MSI's GAMING X TRIO one at my local store though -- they say they're waiting for the delivery.

By the way, I was not going to buy any 30xx this year, but... initial 3080 reviews and tests clarified two very important things:
  • you can use 3080 with PCI x16 3.0 and performance impact seems to be very low,
  • 3080's power consumption might not be that high as Nvidia stated
That means there is a chance I would not need to replace PSU and motherboard in case I would like to replace my 2070S with 3080 next year, for some strange reason.
My MSI RTX 2070S Gaming X Trio is so powerful, yet very cool and quiet, that there is no other option for me than replace it with the same variant of MSI's RTX 3080.

I highly recommend waiting 3-6 months, so they get the launch bugs worked out. You get better cards later, anyway, when the gaming card companies have had time to figure out what can and can't be done with the cards for factory settings anyway.

I Managed to get "add to cart" twice on Newegg, but both times by the time I got to checkout they gave me an out of stock notice

I wanted a FE 3080 this time. I did not want to wait. Hopefully they release another batch at some point.

And here's "my" MSI RTX 3080 Gaming X Trio review, if anyone's interested.
5% faster than the Founders Edition, cool (max temp. doesn't exceed 71 deg) and silent (max 33dB).

Is that a 2 slot card?

100% this. I've been looking into it off and on all day. I just found it ridiculous that they sold out so quick. I've experienced this kind of thing before with tickets, but not hardware. I didn't think I would be able to get a FE, but I thought I could at least get a EVGA, MSI, or some card somewhere. They were all gone though by the time anything could clear the cart. I knew they would go quick, maybe 5min to a half hour, but not instantaneously.

As an answer, I found this article from PC Mag (HERE) and it all started to make sense. Apparently, bots are far more wide spread than I thought. This release was riddled with them. The service that PC mag wrote about was actually bragging with screenshots of their clients getting up to 42 cards, 30 cards, etc. It was so bad, Nvidia was actually tweeting that they are going to manually review the orders for bots. So yes. They need to change the way this happens.

Oh, and Newegg stated that they had more traffic this morning at 6am pst than on black friday....

Games Workshop released a new box with their 9th edition and it was bought out in less than 15 minutes. Apparently bots and duplicate accounts bypassed the limit and bought everything. They released a statement within a few days saying anyone that wants a box can preorder and they'll ship them out as they're made. But could take up to 6 months to fulfill all the orders. Within a day the jacked up prices on Ebay lowered back down to just above the box price.

I think that's the way to go. Let the stock sell out and then allow anyone to still backorder. Making sure people will get a card and leaving scalpers with a huge stock of cards that they really can't sell except to the desperate.

Thanks for the info on this. I had zero intention of getting a 3k card and was looking at the prices of current/previous gen stuff to fall in the toilet (I can dream, po' man needs 8gb vRAM), but seeing the way 'bots have sprayed this launch with liquid dook...

Well, it's not Cricket.

I can only hope there are "Shipping Delays" for anyone they can identify as having made a purchase/s via a 'bot, which would hopefully teach anyone looking to make money off this to not do in future. Oh, you want to put the control in your hands with an unfair tactic and maybe even profit off of others by selling it as a service to them? Well you are not in control, not by a long way, and it does say "Please allow 28 days for arrival" in the Terms, and news for you: it 'aint getting a stamp put on it until day 26 by which time all your scalping and pre-order customers will have walked and stocks will be on store shelves.
