Just for shiggles, I've gone through and compiled a list of named ships mentioned in this thread.

Poor Life Choices (Retaliator) - WarrenPeace
Inconsiderate (Retaliator) - CookieDoctor
Hypatia (Retaliator) - UltraGuido
Dustbringer or Snarky Stuka (Gladiator) - AntiSqueaker
Napalm Sunday (Retaliator) - Groundstain
Surly Girlie (Retaliator) - Nerfgun (note: claimed to be to drunk to name a ship)
Horrendous Space Kablooie (Retaliator) - Thrashdog
Smarmy Diplomat (Gladiator) - Exarkun007 (With a name like that, we know who will be first target during operations)
Cleared Hot (Retaliator) - Trogdor
Aiur (Vanguard) - ThomSirveaux
MoneyShot (Retaliator) - Derkerter
Tevarin Tickler (Retaliator) - Jimmy Dean
Pericheirisia (Retaliator) - NapalmX
Vanquish (Retaliator) - Metralla94

I, for one, can't wait to see the nose art that will grace these deadly darlings. I personally want to go with a classic pinup girl; a sexy redhead that you know is gonna be trouble.
I can't decide.

+1 Retaliator

As for names...
Arbitration Opportunity
Aimed True, Not Friendly
Imminent Defenestration
Margin Call

Thoughts?

Nose art will all be the same. Sharks Teeth ala classic P-51 Mustang/F-4 Phantom art, and my family crest. Or fraternity crest...that would look baller.

I like pretty much any name with Defenestration in it.

Im diggin Margin Call if you did a bull and a bear fighting or crashing into each other as your art.

I'm still working on my art for Napalm Sunday.

...how focused (or un-focused) are we going to be to the core concept of putting warheads on foreheads?

I think we should be heavily focused on our core concept of bombing. As a team we can accomplish more destruction and turn the course of a battle by throwing our weight around in a fight but without a strong focus on organization, communication and teamwork we can't accomplish this.

...What do individual members of the bomber group want to see organization-wise...
  1. Someone needs to be calling a target so we're not pissing torpedoes in the wind.
  2. Without structured communication things will break down.
  3. We will need logistical support for fuel, rearming and a fighter screen. Maybe we can outsource this to other elements interested in handling logistics or fighter squadrons leaving us to focus on what's important, the only downside to outsourcing is we are at the mercy of others to keep us on operating condition.

...what ships are we going to consider applicable for listing...

If we out source logistics and fighters then we should only accept ships capable of damaging Capitol class and similar large ships. Something like the Freelancer MIS, though capable of carrying a large volume of missiles still lacks the firepower to damage larger ships and wouldn't be ideal for a bomber squadron.

Keep in mind the amount of players in an instance will be limited so we want to keep the right groups together a in the right place, so by not limiting our acceptance that could potentially push an essential unit to another instance where they might be incapable of assisting.

I know for a fact that there's going to be a logistics group; if nothing else, to support our mining and cargo divisions, so I don't htink it'd be a huge leap to task them with munition and fuel support for our group.

Regarding the Logistics, I really don't see the need to include auxilliary people as actual unit members (as in Bomber Squadron Starfarers instead of Logistic Starfarers) because I'm not convinced they will be utilised all that much. Bomber squadron is never going to be huge and if we then factor in timezones, worktimes and simply when people are online, we're not likely to ever have huge numbers of bombers flying together. Add to that, the fact that Vanguards are specifically described as 'long distance' and i'm pretty sure Retaliators have a fair bit of range, we won't be doing a great amount of refueling. That said, this is easy-going TEST and if you're a starfarer pilot and want to focus your refuelling on Bombers, i'm sure we're happy to have you.

Also this kinda leads into my second point. Obviously our main aim is the deliverance of long-ranged fuckery but what does that translate to on a day to day basis?
We of course with get involved with things such as Pitchfork/Yawspoon, any war TEST manages to get into and maybe some other conflicts on behalf of TEST but I think those will be few and far between.
Are we going to be a unit that simply forms when needed and do other stuff in between or work more as a bomber mercenary outfit that can be hired by whoever needs us? (Obviously with TEST being our priority customer and never our target).

The mercenary nature wouldn't be a bad fit, as far as I'm concerned; maybe not for money, but I could see bomber group pilots being assigned operations by TEST fleet command when they're online. Carrier-based groups like gladiators would be assigned to a base, ship, carrier, etc as they are available and needed, while longer range ships like the vanguard might be sent out on a strategic op. Retaliators, being the big lumbering birds with the biggest of turds that they are would probably be held in reserve until FC decided they needed something blown to bajeesus and back, at which point they'd whip up a strike package, assign ships and send us out.

There'd also be stuff like anti-cap QRF pilots, pooled from players who are online regularly and willing to drop everfything to scramble a defense op and actual, real merc work. None of these things except for the pre-planned heavy strike units would really need any sort of heavy scheduling of member time, which lends itself well to TEST's rather random nature.

You make a fair point about the last minute scramble.
I want to do a whole load of stuff in the 'verse but I'd happily have my Retaliator loaded and ready and just be on call for an improtu 'Fire Ze Missiles' which could be a good way to have the unit.

QRF preparation and management is an important function of any combat-focused group; it's not always called that, but you see it in a lot of games, from MMOs to shooters like planetside. I don't see any benefit to discounting our ability to limit an opposing org's force projection into our turf with something like a javelin when we can have ships essentially on the flight line ready to reach out and touch them on short notice.

Yeah your territory point brings yet another thought up (At least its a new thought to me). We really need to see what happens in the 'verse regarding things like territory. I've never seen TEST as a 'lets get some space for just us' kind of org but it that how it has to work I have no doubt we will. If that happens then TEST will constantly be having border conflicts and infiltrations that a bomber squadron could be really useful in defending..

Speaking on a personal level, I bought the dropship, rear torps, and cargo. I want to FIRE ZE MISSILES. But what I want most out of any group of our bombers? To be a QRF. My main goal is to have/help acquire (and then defend) a space station. So I could see us striking at suddenly vulnerable locations/ships. Our talis are the "heavy" dropships - more so than the redeemer. We can deliver the most force - perhaps not the fastest, but certainly with the heaviest numbers and munitions. I wouldn't mind recruiting both redeemers and marines for said purpose. If any ship is "most" qualified to be disabling cap ships and then surviving boarding them? That's us. I can't wait.

We actually have a troop-based group, the yellowjackets.
I'm aware of them. I may even be a part of them. But I think having a small number of escorts and marines - if they are willing - be directly associated with us would be a good idea. To expand upon this, I see "pairs" of complementary ships. Super hornets and gladiators. Wardens and Harbingers. Talis and Redeemers. If you think about the sizes, ranges, and weight classes, I think you can see where I am going. I'm gently advocating recruiting some of our complementary ships/personal.

On the other hand, a narrow focus is a powerful thing. I'm not advocating strongly for this. Just a thought.

Edit: I accidentally a sentence.

I think for the bombing group, our focus is not going to be on leaving recoverable targets. If we need someone to go and drop people into a compromised space station, ask a group like the Yellow Jackets or whoever else may be up. If the goal is to permanently deny that space station to the enemy, give Bomb Squad a ring.
