I'm pretty sure an accidental/spur-of-the-moment Retaliator purchase followed by immediate financial regret puts you in the majority group here...
Welcome!
Some of us have even named our bombers because of it. You're in good company!

I really like the sound of acting as QRF, it seems to lend itself well to the Retaliator role, why bring a gun to the fight when you can bring five and some boom boom? I also wouldn't be against acting on some mercenary work if TEST doesn't mind, gotta keep those torpedo bays full.
I like the idea, too; but I don't see a bomber wing being able to support a QRF role. We'd be more like the not-so-QRF that becomes the big, drunk, red-bearded, kilt-wearing, log-throwing, muscle behind the actual QRF.

I also whole heartedly agree that having a small escort detachment would be most beneficial to our unit/quadron, and for larger, planned missions, use units like the Yellow Jackets as support. This not only allows us to focus mostly on what we want to do, i.e.: blow crap up; but also gives the other units an additional reason to exist as well. Additionally, if we had a dedicated detachment, those pilots could also become the turret gunners (if so inclined) on the larger bombers for the longer or planed sorties.

I personally have a Vanguard "Hairbanger" that I fully intend to employ in both roles, fighter and bomber; and a brand new Saber upgrade that I picked up for my F7-M that I'm not sure what to do with yet.

Excellent points; I'd reckon our QRF duties would mainly boil down to "oh crap, our shipping convoy got jumped by an idris and our fighter screen can't cut it. We'll do our best but if someone could get their ass out here with a bunch of torpedoes, that'd be neat" type situations. Our anti-cap ship capabilities are what's going to be our bread and butter, and I'm sure there will be situations where we're needed on short notice.

This and long range strike ops, ie. theres been pirates hitting our convoys on one of our routes, and we just found out where there base is, be gear up in a bunch of harbingers, talis and gladiators, jump in as close as possible, do massive damage as quick as possible, and jump back out, a "hit and hype" raid. These sorts of raids is where you get support from the yellow jackets, using long range ships like 325s, wardens, and maybe superhornets (i dont know how long range capable theyll be).

we're going to need some way to INGAME communicate more efficiently before we can do much of anything

What do you mean? We'll have outside communication where we can all hop in a room together, though I wish discord had a channel commander option.

The game is still early for communications, I'm sure they'll have better chat and add voip.

As for tactics and teamwork it's still really early to impose a structure on our unofficial group that we can't really do anything with currently.

For out of Game comms in the future if discord doesn't have a channel commander/group type feature I have a private TeamSpeak server good for 512 people I use for my friends and I. Each crew can setup in their own private channel and the captains can use channel commander to get orders and share info.

I mean, how do we all meet in the same instance. We have to add eachother rather clunkily too. There should be an easy drop down menu to select Org mates and squadmates who are online and message them, then there should be ways to communicate what your doing by toggling looking for crew or pilot or throwing up an advertisement to a fleet, etc...

Pretty sure they mentioned somewhere the intention of automatically putting people from the same org in the same instance whevever possible.

We may be going a little off topic for this thread but ...
It'll be interesting to see how many people they manage to get onto an instance, balancing will be interesting with such a large group, we'll want some kind of competition .... Do we keep to an instance to continue to shape its direction or dart around. Out of interest how does Eve handle this?

I don't know about you guys but it'd be great to take over a small quantity space, have they talked at all about played owned stations/factories/sectors? Maybe a topic for another thread.

There will be player owned stations (maybe), but players will not be able to actually "own" space in star citizen.
