Basically, A Ship is more than looks and armament. Its also the personality of the person flying it.
This is why I have so many ships.... I should probably be on medication for this split personality, but the voices in my head say I'm good:rolleyes:
In a just world you are right, but I would wait till the game comes out before I stick to that. Who knows game may launch and the carrack will be so bad ass it wont matter how good a pilot you are, then they nerf it and we all will be wishing we bought a cat.
Im not expecting the carrack to be as good as some people claim, same with the starfarer, sure the SF is great right now, but its also the very first of the Large ships and the first to implement the systems they will be adding to the large ships and capital ships.
It is a guarantee that it will be nerfed in upcoming patches, at least in manueverability, if not also in some other places. Plus the new classification system and shield splitting that they want to implement, dont expect all the currently awesome ships to be OP. CR has said himself, he doesnt want it to be a game where if you have a certain ship you are unstoppable. Especially with this being a game where if you can afford the higher end ships, and you buy them, then on release anybody who didnt want to pledge, or didn't pledge as much isnt going to enjoy the game if they get raped by people who had more money.
There will be advantages and disadvantages to every ship. And specialized ships like the carrack and SF are going to suffer in other areas, even if they dont right now, they eventually will be balanced accordingly. The caterpillar i suspect wont be great at attacking people, but will be a good defensive ship, so if you have cutlasses or bucs getting hit hard they can run back to the cat, and the cat will have the defensive ability to help support them. I also expect the cat to be highly modular in its role, however that will come at the cost of being less effective in what ever role its in due to its modularity vs something specialized in that role.

You are, of course, very right. And anyone who expects their expensive ship to be the be-all end-all is in for a nasty surprise.
Specialized ships will be extremely good at what they are purposed for, and in need of support for those things they are not purposed for. I do not expect to see a Carrack blazing into battle and destroying multiple enemies. I do expect it to be able to defend itself long enough to make an escape.
