If it means better networking, then yay. People are complaining that we only get 24 players on a map and that the netcode needs improvement. Why would we complain when CIG switches to a new engine that improves networking?
agreed, although to attempt at balance it is another case of wasted time and money in a project that is having trouble shaking those bad habits.

In general though, I see this as a positive. It means in a year where it outwardly seemed very little got done, they actually did something pretty big.

only [concern] is that lumberyard is a beta branch so smooth sailing is not guaranteed. Production at own risk.

Tad scary still. They talked about the awesome Star Engine for years... years. Apparently now we're on a better version of the Crytek Engine, one that has better netcode - Lumberyard. That's to get us out of the lag fest we were facing with a handful of people logged on. So all that work to Star Engine and obviously they couldn't break many -any- barriers. Lumberjack is now the magic key, and we're going to have flawless Jav's and Indri flying around, with 20 or so escorts each, and 100 people? Well, let's hope so.

Nice, I'll get a great connection with that Oregon farm.

But man, this quote from your last post.. meh,
Amazon GameLift is designed to support session-based games with game loops that begin and end within a specified time period. Typically, these are multiplayer games in genres like first person shooters, MOBAs, fighting, racing, or sports. Amazon GameLift is not designed to support games with persistent worlds that never reset, such as MMOs or sandbox games.

Anyway, enough doom and gloom - it's going to be beautiful!

This finally offers some explanation as to why CIG was "very close" to a SQ42 demo in October, yet here we are almost in 2017 with no demo.

As others have stated, it's not like they were still on a legitimate cryengine build. They deviated from that a long time ago. Add in the issues that Crytek has been having, and you have a very easy decision to move to lumberyard. The only hesitation I might have is that Amazon is now in business with our game. Granted, it's not Amazon directly, but still. It could be an issue. Amazon is cutthroat.

I am more than willing to give them the benefit of the doubt though. Amazon may be bad, but they sure look better than crytek right now...

WOW nice job CGI, you guys are smart

I was worried they will make a prioprietary netcode/server systems, as a game studio the result would have been poor, because they make and should keep making games, not infrastructures.

This explains the following:
* faster game load time
* delay of 2.6
* relative low pings (I have 150 in East EU), probably when they activate the rest of AWS clouds will be like 20ms

They took their CryEngine modifications (where they modified lots of systems except the netcode), and merged it to AWS cryengine (who I suspect didn't modified a lot of systems except the netcode). As developers know this is a git merge:

EDIT: I do not know how much % of the Lumberyard have, or if the CGI modifications allow these, but AWS engine:
* supports PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, iOS (iPhone 5S+), and Android (Samsung Note 4 and equivalents). Support for broader mobile hardware is coming soon, along with additional support for Mac and Linux.
* We currently support Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and OSVR. Because VR is a rapidly evolving area, we've built Lumberyard's VR support to be modular, meaning you can add support for new HMDs without writing code, helping you support new HMDs as they are released.

The only bad Side I can see - are the prices. AWS have good services but they are very (as in very at least 2x) times more expensive. But we will pay more for the game, but will have a higher quality.

I'm guessing they struck a deal with amazon to be able to use their own code as they see fit during this project and to leverage that code on top of amazons platform, win really as we get the star citizen we've always had, alongside some super powerful infrastructure and tools.

People who moan about things like this are silly billys as why do you actually want CIG to waste hundreds or thousands of man hours developing extremely complex advanced and scalable infrastructure when people like amazon and google have been doing it for years and are good at it! No point in reinventing the wheel - just let CIG write code and then just click play on amazon servers.

Merry Xmas CIG!

I think the moaning is more about the money and time spent on a modified engine thats now largely replaced. The idea that CIG believed they could do it all and spent time and money on that goal to now backtrack and have to adapt and port to a similar, but sufficiently different engine.

Im happy they did it, Im annoyed they needed to do it. If that makes sense.

I can tell you with 100% certainty that they didn't have to backtrack, adapt and port anything. Lumberyard is the exact same thing as CryEngine in every aspect except netcode. What Lumberyard did provide CIG was a CryEngine with cloud deployment tools.

then why did the statement state it was a lot of work and took considerable time? Why did Chris talk about significant changes?

star engine was CE3, this is a branch if CE5, I believe.

and in any case, I suspect neither of us is qualified to speak in terms even approaching 100% certainty.

StarEngine is a branch of 3.8, Lumberyard is a branch of 3.8.

Also Chris states this "Making the transition to Lumberyard and AWS has been very easy and has not delayed any of our work, as broadly, the technology switch was a ‘like-for-like’ change, which is now complete."

Also regarding qualification, I spent 4 years working as a physics programmer for CryEngine with Tencent.

The switch to Lumberyard has been done for months now. I was already having talks about this with the devs during CitizenCon. Lumberyard is essentially CryEngine with better networking facilities. No major rewrites required, nothing of the sort.
Yes. this is the part people miss.

Explained in simpler terms, CIG made a chocolate cake. Then Amazon Lumberyard is icing that can go on a cake that makes it better.

CIG did not switch out the cake for a big block of icing.

I'm really hyped for this - Working closely with amazon means that they're gonna assumedly have access to the cloud based servers which in turn means we're going to have a far far more responsive game etc. Essentially 'Yay adaptive servers which are going to scale processing power based on user load, and do all sorts of smart backup and failsafe things'

I hope.

But I was always told the cake is a lie, sorry had to play devils advocate just once in this thread
