Honest question: Would buying my components and jamming them together be cheaper than buying an off-the-shelf unit where someone else builds it and the company has the mass buying power I don't?

A good question, and as far as I know, the answer nowadays is "It depends". It seems that lower end systems are actually cheaper to buy premade, while higher-end still benefits from DIY discount.

EDIT: Oh, yeah, I forgot, GPU crisis. Could be cheaper to buy premade regardless of your price range RIGHT NOW. Unless you want some real specific setup and would end up swapping out parts from a premade anyways.

Many thanks for your expiriance, I'm prolly gonna aim for low end. 1050'll do me okay as long as it has enough RAM so i'll go shopping on the net once i've saved up :)

I have nothing to brag about:
i6700K @4.2GHz
32GB DDR4 2166MHz RAM
13GB 1080Ti
PCi x4 Optane
displays 32"@2560x1440, 2x 24"@1920x1200, 24"@1920x1080
I now want a 4k monitor...
I actually never noticed it, but 4k, 3840x2160 has the same amount of pixels as my 3 main displays

ATM it's a growing stockpile of shiny things on my desk.
A bunch of shiny things on a desk do look like a nice setup for the beginning of a PC build.

Presently, I'm currently using the following self built PC:

Case : Thermaltake Suppressor F51 Power Cover Edition
CPU : AMD FX 8350
Cooler : Corsair H100i v1
Ram : 32gb DDR3 AMD Gamer Series 2400
GPU : 2x Asus Strix 480 OC 08gb
Boot : 256 SSD
Storage : WD Black 6TB
Display : Vizio 32" 120hz 1080p
Fl Stick : Thrustmaster T16000M

I generally get between 15-30fps on SC currently, but at certain places or when around Reclaimers that dips to around 10fps. Which is playable as far as doing basic cargo runs goes, but any sort of fighting in the PU is out of the question.

I'm hoping that by the end of the year I'll be able to upgrade to a much better system that will handle SC better.

I'm curious how many people actually use wireless, backlighted keyboards. Lighting seems to me would be extremely useful.
While not wireless I have come to love the RGB on my G810 spectrum. I used to and still think RGB is somewhat over done often. But it actually CAN be useful. I have profiles that run specific to each game and will actually do things like change the color of the key(s) when I'm low on ammo, or something is or isn't activated. I dig it.
