Okay, well since there aren't any other categories in our forums that suit this just yet, I'm posting it here in Logistics, since Infinity's order of business is "information logistics".
Basically, Infinity Squad will start life in the Persistent Universe with a primary Exploration mission statement, and when the initial exploration push is concluded, Infinity Squad will be rolled into several other new categories. They are as follows: Imaging Intelligence (IMINT), Signals Intelligence (SIGINT), and Celestial Cartography (CELINT). Infinity Squad will also develop extra skillsets that may be helpful for specialized needs (SPEC). I'll break down these categories into specific roles that prospective Infinity Squad applicants may be interested in.
SIGINT
- Data Specialists (Anybody with a Herald, good at running data)
- Electronic Warfare Specialists (Defensive and Offensive EWAR)
- Sensor/Scanner Specialists (Useful for Exploration and as part of a command vessel)
IMINT & CELINT
- Stellar Cartography (Charting unknown systems)
- Science Officer (Also falls under SPEC)
- Resource Mapping
- Jump Point Charting
- Photography
SPEC
- Medical (Medic & Doctor)
- Engineering (Repairs & Optimization)
- Scouting
- Information Analysis
- Other roles that may be called for in Infinity Squad missions
The short of it is, Infinity Squad is a well-rounded squad that specializes in information acquisition in-universe. "But isn't that spying?" You might ask.
Well, my response is: Are you stupid? Read a dictionary. None of Infinity Squad's mission roles cover espionage, apart from hacking the Spectrum (yes, that will probably be a thing), and targeted data interception of other couriers ("pull over and give us all your data, or we blow you to pieces."). Even those aren't clandestine like what you'd think. I'll let the spies do the spying, and I'll do my part as a data specialist.
To give you an idea of what a typical Infinity Squad mission will be like after the first couple of weeks of PU (of which will be spent with the majority on voluntary assignment to exploration), let's look at the
Galactic Guide for the Rihlah System.
In the Guide, it says:
This kind of rumor would be something that Infinity Squad would investigate. We'd put the job up on the Infinity Squad board, and any takers are encouraged to work together as a unit to find out more. If a positive outcome is achieved, they may receive a payout from the pooled funds of Infinity Squad (this point, I'm still thinking on and hammering out details of, so all details associated with a funding pool for I.S. is in the air.)
Overall, I see Infinity Squad as a group dedicated to improving each member's skillset in information, data observation and gathering, and making snap decisions on the spot. I anticipate that one of the most common roles for an Infinity Squad member, will be sitting at the sensor station aboard a multi-crew ship (be it heavy ship or capship), and watching the scans and information very closely.
Any thoughts, or questions? You're also welcome to express your interest in Infinity Squad in this thread; I plan on putting up an official application when the Persistent Universe Alpha launches.
Important Disclaimer: Infinity Squad is not an official group in TEST Squadron...yet.
