Okey, it's a refueling ship, but it has a decent enough cargo space, and it's covered in turrets. Just maybe don't fill it with anything easily flammable, like fuel, and it'll do alright in a firefight. Against smaller ships anyhow. Something like a Connie might get a bit hairy, but in such case you could probably just run away, that hull is sturdy enough to take a few hits while you're spooling quantum drive.

I'd be just running cargo, scooping fuel and selling used cars out of the cargo bay.

Mercury Star Runner

- Carries as much cargo as an Andromeda
- Can also do data running
- Has comm scanning station for data retrieval/interception
- Has hidden smuggling compartments
- is faster than the Andromeda
- is not a Tube Ship, ie has actual side rooms and then some
- Is not burdened by struts obstructing pilot visibility
- Can be more comfortably crewed solo or 2-3 to utilize full capabilities.

For me its a much better all rounder, so much so I have 2 of them. One will be upgraded full military spec and the other full stealth spec. I see it as my every day run around ship if I need to go form A to B.

The POLARIS, because we likes to eat all the lesser birds.

--Fast for a ship its size. In Quantum or out, it is quick to the point of the action.

--Powerful. . .though methinks they need to upgrade those guns since yet again they are putting bigger stuff on smaller ships. There was no intention to have S7-9 guns in game when the Polaris came out. That chin mount needs twin S8s.

--Torpedoes make things go POP!

--It has a pool table. N'uff said.

--It has the kewlest bridge this side of an Idris, complete with holoviewer. Me dig's way kewl stuff like this. Click on my sig.

--I'm focused on killing things and taking their treasure. I want to kill Vanduul, but I'm all in for killing pirates, smugglers, slavers, drug lords and basically anyone south of the law I come across, and taking their shit. I'm all mean like that.

--Bounty hunting the hardest targets. . .my crew and I are all in. Wait. . .erm. . .where's my crew? Off drinking again those landlubbers.

--Exploration. . .fortune and glory await, and we can manage so long as we have beer.

--Cap class sensors combined with sneaky stealth tactics call to me. They make my pants tight. Captain tightpants.

--I like the idea that when my crew and I show up, our reputation precedes us and people need to change for clean shorts. Be afraid. Be very afraid. Time to die.

"OWL!!! I told you NOT those shitty, discount Chinese torpedoes! Now look at what you've done! It's dented!"

"Uuuurp. Sorry. I wrote "can openner" on it. Thought that would help."

In my opinion, the best starter multi-role ship is the Avenger Titan.

It has reasonable firepower for a ship its size & price, it can carry some cargo & if need be you can transport a passenger safely in the pilot's bed.
It also has speed, virtually nothing can catch it. But it has a very small cargo capacity so I wouldn't bank on that for in-game income. You'll be doing missions for your bread and butter, but you could do missions in the Aurora for less than half the price... if you can stand flying that slow...

1. Caterpillar

2. It is THE jack of all trades ship (as so stated in its description). It can do a little bit of everything. Not to mention the modularity (soonTM) that you can change out the pods for specialized feats like a salvage pod, or a crew quarters pod, etc. AND it even has a separate, detachable command module which can act as an entirely unique ship!

1. The obvious answer is TEST Multipurpose ship is the BEST multipurpose ship.

2. Also you're asking a lot of questions in the last time, whats going on here...?

3. I think i'm with printimus and say caterpillar, but it all depends on non-confirmed modules. So currently i think maybe the corsair:
good firepower,
good size,
Explorer capability,
can haul cargo (72 SCU planned),
I expect it to be less armored and agile.

4. But my recommendation is:
Instead of buying one ship which is average get one dedicated Freelancer for each job. :)

The Aurora CL, Mustang Alpha & Origin 135C all have 6 SCU of cargo capacity, while the Avenger Titan can carry 8. Of those 4, only the Titan & the 135C have beds for easy logging capabilities. The Titan also has the best set of weapons & is the most maneuverable in the starter group.

The Aurora, of cause, is the best ship. 🍻

That said, it's also important to underline that we are talking about the best ship already in game, as surely there will be more ships and more upgrades. Also, we need to mention that a multi role may mean different things for different people.

At this stage, for me personally, I would say that Constellation Aquila is the best multi role ship.

It can do (but may not necessarily do it better than specialised ships):
  • Cargo and delivery missions
  • Can act as a drop-ship
  • Can act as a gunship
  • Can be a personal transport for both short and long range
  • Can do bounties (but this will likely change, as bounty hunting will be more intricate, it won't be just search and destroy missions)

So far pretty much like other ships. But then, it can also do exploration, which other ships can't do at all, or can't do well. Also, being an explorer ship it has better efficiency, greater range, and better autonomy.

This may sound on par with ships like the Star Runner and Corsair, but the Aquila carries a snub, something other ships don't have. The snub opens many possibilities used itself or together with the Connie. Also, it carries a rover, which Star Runner can't do for example.

Also, the Aquila (imho) outperforms other ships in:
  • Good price/quality balance
  • Good redundancy
  • Escape pods

And, on top of all of that, the Aquila is supposed to be the largest ship that can be effectively used solo.

With future mods system, you may be able to install dedicated computers or scientific equipment in it, but that's guesswork, similar to comparing ships already in game, and existing as a concept.

There may be another point of view, and that is, when we talk about the modularity, the Hull E is promised to be the king of mods. If you can mod it into anything, then the Hull E may be the best multi role ship.

Tough question. I can't comment on any ship I have not flown, which is many. I can't comment on any ship I can't yet fly either, which as many are not flight ready, that's even more.

I have flown the Connie Andro. It's okay but easily taken out by Arrows. That's not a ship I could call multi roll if Anvils starter ship can down it in under 40 seconds.

The Starfarer is big enough to carry ground vehicles, but it's a question mark as to if the damned thing can get off the ground if you can successfully land it in the first place.

Herald too specialized, likewise any single-seat fighter.

So... I think the Avenger. Big enough cargo bay for a bike, enough cargo space, enough pew for engagements, quick enough to run away and easy enough to get from space to surface to space again... might be just the thing.

Well not sure if it is the best but I've been using my freelancer mis for _everything_, every type of mission it can do very well.

been doing the same thing with my starfarer gemini. Just for the lols as it's like piloting a drunk whale. Had a player in an avenger titan try and take me out last night, after peppering my shields for a long time and taking them down to about 98%, I managed to eventually line up a shot, 3 seconds he was gone lol. Poor little bugger didn't know what hit him! 4 x S4 see to that.

Avenger to start. Especially once you can add prisoner pods, and possibly the Warlock module.

My "daily driver" is likely to be the Vanguard.

Bigger, multi-crew, once it has modules and blades are a thing, I am partial to the Retaliator, but that may change as balance changes.

Of course the Aurora  but I tend to use the Retaliator more and more because it carries boxes/beer and if the opportunity presents itself I can pick off a wanted player with one of the six size 9 torps when they wander off into an atmosphere. Not to mention that after a few Vodkas it gets me to and from my destination points fast enough to make a fresh drink and get back into the action.

For now it's the Cutlass Black. It has a low overhead to operate thanks to the size and low crew requirements, lets you carry a little more than the Avenger Titan, has ample room for a ground vehicle or bike and can handle itself in combat.

In the future, it's going to be the Caterpillar thanks to the modularity.
