COVID Catharsis Corner - Reports from around the world from today, Wednesday 9th of September.

- World: 27,628,190 confirmed cases and 898,757 confirmed deaths.

- Vaccine: The promising Oxford University Vaccine trial is on hold as participant in the UK falls ill - the trial currently involves 30,000 people across the US, South Africa, Brazil and the UK. Scientists describe the pause as "routine" as far as trials go, as the cause of the illness has not yet been ascertained and the halt is standard practice in trials when this happens, as a precautionary measure in the face of that uncertainty until it can be investigated.

- US: Iowa and North and South Dakota have emerged as the latest hotspots after a spike in new cases. Total deaths stand at close to 190,000 with the forecast being between 200,000 and 211,000 by September 26th.

- UK: New restriction bought in limiting gatherings to 6 people in the face of surge in cases. Government has taken feedback so have simplified the advice on this new rule: branding it as "The Rule Of Six" saying it is very clear, very simple, and that no one can confuse it - the limit of gatherings is 6 socially distanced people and 6 people only. It's clear cut, it's super easy to understand, only six people can gather in a group. It's in homes, it's in pubs, it's in restaurants, 6 people only. It's the Rule Of Six. Get it? Six. Got it? Six. Good. (Six). But it will not apply to schools, workplaces or Covid-secure weddings, funerals, gyms and organised team sports and some other exceptions. And this is only England as Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland all have their own rules. Clear as a brick wall, eh?

- Italy: Former leader Silvio "Bunga Bunga" Berlusconi gives statement from hospital “It [the virus] is very bad,” ... "I'm giving it my all and I really hope to make it and be able to get back on track”, his doctors have stated his condition has shown favorable progress.

- Portugal: Highest daily cases since April.

- Denmark: Highest daily cases since April.

- Czech Republic: Number of daily cases pass 1000 for the first time.

- World: 27,925,613 confirmed cases and 905,089 confirmed deaths.

- US: New book indicates President Trump knew of the severity of COVID-19 as early as February and chose to underplayed it to avoid public panic. The revelations come from tape recorded interviews where he said in interviews with journalist Bob Woodward early on that COVID was deadly, yet publicly said it was much less of a risk than Flu. President Trump responded saying "I don't want people to be frightened, I don't want to create panic... certainly I'm not going to drive this country or the world into a frenzy."

- UK: States it wants a "moonshot" target of being able to perform 10 million COVID tests a day. Mass testing on a scale it could test the entire nation in one week would be incredible, and a powerful tool to defeat the virus in the country. But questions are raised, can they do it with current or near future testing technologies?

- India: Record high day of new cases at 95,735.

- Israel: Considers national lockdown option as it sees a record high number of daily cases.

- US: 70 people contract COVID-19 at a wedding in Minnesota. The event had 270 guests, exceeding the allowed capacity.

- UK: Another Thursday, another country added to the quarantine list causing a rush for tourists to return to the UK before Saturday, this time from Portugal.

- Scotland: Lowers number of people allowed to meet in a group line with Englands Rule Of Six (sicks, get it?)

- World: 28,268,970 confirmed cases and 911,282 confirmed deaths.

- World: Passes 28 million confirmed cases, we passed 27 million on Monday meaning 1 million new cases in the last 4/5 days.

- India: Records the highest global single day of cases yet, at 96,551

- Spain: New record daily high at 12.183 cases, surpassing the highs seen in the first wave.

- France: Government rules out another lockdown but introduces new restrictions as cases continue to surge with daily cases nearing 10k.

- Scotland: Adds Lanarkshire to the Glasgow and near area lockdown.

- Switzerland: Outbreaks in just two elderly care-homes leaves 90 people infected and 8 dead.

- US: Journalist who saved the revelations that Trump knew of the COVID threat but didn't warn his nation as early as February criticized for not raising the alarm sooner.

- UK: R number transmission rate now over 1, meaning it is now officially considered to be growing as cases rise by 3,539 and stats reveal cases are doubling every 7 to 8 days (there is a metric we have not seen in a while!)

- UK: Announces track-and-trace app to launch on 24th of September, 14 days away.

- Germany: To reopen brothels in waves as court rules the horizontal tango no more likely to spread COVID than gymnastic or parties with several dozen attendees.

- UK: Following a charity football match near Sunderland with 300 attendees, 60 have tested positive with all instructed to quarantine.

- US: Dr. Fauci informa a panel, and America: "Don't ever, ever underestimate the potential of the pandemic. And don't try and look at the rosy side of things [...] We need to hunker down and get through this fall and winter, because it's not going to be easy."

- World: 28,565,084 confirmed cases 916,919 confirmed deaths.

- UK: Oxford University Vaccine trials which were halted after a UK trial participant fell ill resume, however no details of the illness have been released as yet.

- India: Another world record, 97,570 new cases in one day, as supplies of oxygen which is used to treat victims of COVID, dwindles in some places.

- France: Over 10k new daily cases reached for the first time at 10,561.

- Hungary: Sees highest day of new cases so far.

- US: Reports emerge the spokesman for the US Health Department who is a former Trump campaign official sought to alter CDC reports on the pandemic, apparently complaining they “would undermine the president’s optimistic messages about the outbreak”. His response was that he was attempting to battle 'deep state' ulterior motives. As an outside observer who doesn't really know what's going on in that country, I'll need some help understanding this one: it's hard for me to see the ulterior motive behind attempts to change official reports to match presidents admitted untruthful statements about how deadly the pandemic is not as some kind of overreach of state power, and more as deliberate concealment of the facts from the incumbent administration...?

- France: After sharing a car with the director of the Tour De France who tested positive for COVID-19, french prime minister has tested negative twice and so will stop self isolating.

- UK: A 19 year old in Nottingham who hosted a large house party of 50 people hit with a £10,000 ($12,797) fine. Authorities warn not to treat this weekend as a last chance to party before the 6 person group cap begins on Monday.

- Cuba: Havana lockdown will be extended for another month and transport between provinces will be prohibited as cases spread out from the capitlal.

- UEA: United Arab Emirates sees highest day of new cases so far.

After warnings from UK authorities not to treat this weekend as a party ahead of the incoming group cap lowering to 6, I counted no less than three groups of rowdy assholes waking my miserable old arse up in the middle of the night on their way home from the pub. I live in a large village in the middle of nowhere so grief knows how bad it was elsewhere in the UK.

The pubs are going to remain open, they'll still be able to go out drinking together - just in a group no larger than 6 people.

One wonders if cases spike even harder in two weeks time they'll close the pubs again, however that would once again be a reactionary move, not a considered precautionary one. It's disappointing to see although we have been through one wave already we are still reacting to events, not controlling them. "Don't treat this weekend as a party" really should have been "This weekend all pubs and clubs WILL be closed ahead of group caps lowering, they will be back open for business on Monday."

Honestly, I am surprised you don't just get tested biweekly. Not that it would prevent you from contracting the virus and spreading it but it would more quickly identify carriers and allow for sweeping quarantine of those who are infected and those who came into contact with them since the last test. Or just lock groups into small earth 2 habs for the next year, once you realize that all of the testings only tells you after the fact if someone is sick and has possibly infected others.

We as a species are very bad at hygiene and are terrible about wash our hands but love touching our eyes and mouth and everything else.

I am interested to see how the northern hemisphere infection rate increases this fall/winter with schools open and people generally over social distancing, quarantines and being out of work.

- France: Marseille warns it is running out of hospital beds for patients.

- US: Trump holds campain rally in an indoor arena in Nevada, against pandemic advice. The crowd was reported not to be social distancing and apparently many were maskless.

- UK: Minister for Police asks the people of the UK to shop their friends, family and neighbours to the law if they see anyone disobeying the "Rule Of Six" by calling the non-emergency phone numbers the country has had for a number of years now.

- US/Germany: 26 year old American woman linked to an outbreak in Alpine resort town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen where she visited multiple bars last week despite showing symptoms and having been told to quarantine while awaiting the results of a COVID test. “Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a model case of stupidity and an example for how quickly one can become infected,” the areas governor said.

- Brussles: An estimated 4000 health workers protested calling for more spending on healthcare services.

- World: Report by the Gates Foundation indicates that world development has been set back 20 years.

- Ireland: Entire political cabinet in Dublin must self isolate as COVID infiltrates the upper echelons.

- World/US: Report from the Pew Research Center has president of the USA as the lowest ranked world leader for global trust in 'doing the right thing for global affairs' at just 16% approval following the handling of coronavirus. This ranks below the leader of China (where the virus outbreak began) at 19% and leader of Russia at 23%.

- UK: 88% of students went back to schools when they reopened for the Autumn term. The government advised this should give the remaining 12% of parents confidence to send their children back to classes.

- UK: Testing system appears to be completely banjaxed (a technical term identical to 'fucked' in everything but spelling) as capacity shortages become increasingly apparent... yet unapparent at the same time. One woman interviewed on national radio advised she had to use a postcode from a town 500 miles away to get a COVID test locally - the center she attended appeared to have low-to-no demand while being staffed and having the resources to perform its task...

- Number of patents on COVID ventilators at any one time goes over 100 for the first time since July.

- Denmark: Restrictions bought in on nightlife in Copenhagen as cases spike.

- Netherlands: Reports highest ever number of daily cases, mostly in Amsterdam an the Hague.

- Canada: Says it is way more prepared for wave 2 than it was for wave one as cases again climb, but will not rule out another national lockdown if need be.

- France: To Fast-Track frontline workers for citizenship as thanks for their vital role in working the COVID crisis as Marseilles and Bordeaux bring in new restrictions.

- Czech Republic: R number has risen to 1.59 according to the Institute for Health Information and Statistics.

President Trump, denying that he downplayed the serious of COVID-19 despite previously having said he was being a "cheerleader" and there also being a recorded interview from February where he clearly states he knew how serious the pandemic was but then went on to not share this information with the rest of his countrymen.

- US: The Maine wedding reception that resulted in COVID cases as reported earlier in this thread, has now resulted in 7 confirmed deaths.

- Spain: To introduce targeted lockdown areas around Madrid.

- UK: News that bloodsports like fox hunting and grouse shooting are exempt from Rule Of Six, causes confusion and accusations of elitism.

- South Africa: Estimates suggest a fifth of the population have been exposed to COVID-19 so far.

- Ireland: Parliament reconvenes after COVID tests come back negative.

- Taiwan: A "Flight to nowhere" where passengers get on a plane, fly for a few hours and land at the same airport they left from, sells out of seats in only four minutes.

- UK: Bus passenger uses a live snake as a mask. A spokesperson for Transport for Greater Manchester advised that although there is room for interpretation as to what can be used as a mask, "we do not believe it extends to the use of snakeskin - especially when still attached to the snake."

- UK: Another Thursday, another slew of countries added to the travel quarantine list, this time Slovenia and the island of Guadeloupe. Once again, the deadline for return without quarantine being 4am on Saturday.

- Philippines: A provincial Governor asks citizens to inform on their noisy Karaoke neighbors, as loud singing late in to the night is keeping folks awake risking their immune systems.

- UK: A hospital has to issue an urgent plea not to visit Accident And Emergency (the UK version of the ER I think?) after 100 people turned up requesting COVID tests following a failure of the national test infrastructure to provide coverage in their area.

- Australia/UK: A group of airlines advise 30,000 Australians are stranded in the UK due to the countries quarantine cap of 4,000 returning individuals a week.
