Other member of houshold still testing positive, kid still coughing and had a rough night as it was 34c in the house for most of it.

I ran out of tests and bought more but it was a 3 day delivery window with caveat that it could be 3 days on top of that too. Gotta say since they stopped being free and government distrobuted, getting latteral flow tests to people who need them has gone to crap. 6 days? I'll potentially have recovered and stopped being detectable by then!
I feel for you and wish for a quick recovery for you and your family. But I also have to wonder how we got to the point with this obsession with covid tests. Any time the wife, kids or I get sick it's where are the tests, and the thought "I hope I don't get covid" or "I hope they don't have covid" and relief when it's negative as if it's some shameful disease.

For me its not shame, its responsiility - Staying home while shedding, making sure our child is not put in harms way, and wanting to be able to warn elderly relaives if they have been potentially exposed. Some things you cant take back and I'd not want the first indication to be an intubation.

I'm not sure when being socially aware and attentive became a shameful thing but it does seem to have been a feature of public discourse over the last few years.

NaffNaff please get better soon. I know how frustrating it is so please take care of yourself and family.

Bambooza - I have to agree with you, if you get it, you got it, a test will not prevent anything or serve any other purpose other than confirmation.

I agree if you have it stay home but how is that different than any other cold prior to Covid19. In fact, it always frustrated me when coworkers came to work sick or used up their sick time taking care of their kids so they ended up coming to work sick because they had no sick time left. If anything perhaps the social stigma will help convince them to stay home when sick, but I am not sure it will. But more than anything hearing you talk about not being able to find tests made me realize I have done the same thing and I am wondering why. It's not like we did this with any other cold, and yet anytime the kids or I get sick I pull out a test kit and check them.

I would like to believe a sense of resposeability rather than stigma, but you may have a point, the sucessful Drink Drive campains in the UK turned a Meh topic into the taboo it so rightly is.

Those aspects combined with changing ways of working from home (for those who can) hopefully will blunt the must-be-at-desk cultural mentality.

And there we go:

This confirmation now means (if I hadn't already been given the confirmation of it already being in the household) I can now perform precautions in a responsible manner which ensures this chain of infection ends with me.

Unfortunately, it does not really end with you. This is what people don't understand. You have been infectious for 3-5 days, even though it doesn't show on the rapid test. Also after it's over, in sometime between 28 days and 6 months (depending on your immunity), you can catch it again. The process is called immune escape.
But take heart. Immune escape means you already have the ability to fight it off. If you're vaccinated or had it before, this is going to probably feel like a cold, maybe with a bit of fever. Nothing really bad. You might not even have a lot of symptoms, maybe none. Asymptomatic transmission is this virus's hallmark.

Accepted, but for the 7 or so days going forward I could have continued spreading it if i had not got confirmation, it will be stopped. And potential chain going forward will cease.

I didn't start it, but I'm stopping it.

I do see your point about asymptomatic spread... would a dream scenario be 100℅ of cases being asymptomatic? are there viruses where this is already the case?

There are a number of viruses that start out asymptomatic and some like AID can go on for years before they were deadly, or rabies beyond the initial bite can not show symptoms for 4 days to 6 years before the onset of fever and death.

I'm not Joe Biden by the way, but I bet if he was a TESTie he'd have broken the news here first, too:

Explains why the press secretary last week was not answering the press cores question about the president's tests.

But now @NaffNaffBobFace you'll have to beat President Biden to a full recovery. :)

Indeed, but those hang around. What of ones which leave the system after a visit.

I recall the following on the Epstein-Barr virus potentially being a ke y i Multiple Sclerosis:

It is a dream case. Asymptomatic means we might not even be aware it exists, unless someone took a serious look at the new proteins being found in people. As long as it stayed that way, it couldn't ever become more than a footnote in some medical journal or the other if anything. But there is always a chance that any virus can start infecting us, and when they do we usually can't contain it well. This one gave us at least 3 warnings over the last 20 years, we mostly ignored them. Hopefully, lesson learned. Likely not.

I'm not Joe Biden by the way, but I bet if he was a TESTie he'd have broken the news here first, too:

Um, how would we even tell? Is not like we have full body scans daily so if a virus was asymptomatic and left the body after a short say it would be near impossible to find.

Antibodies perhaps.

Here's one of the sources. It looks like a retrospective study. You know what else. 100% of people who contract both Epstein-Barr and Multiple Sclerosis also breathe oxygen. The study only proves there is a demonstrable relationship, it does not prove causality.

You're right about antibodies but the issue is we only know what antibody to look for due to enough people developing symptoms and then blood work looking for a common antibody across the group. I guess if the same antibody shows up in lots of people's routine bloodwork it would be flagged but not sure the tests are typically looking for such things.
