Probably no matter the capabilities of any ship, any attacker will have gauged their ability to defeat their target presuming the worst--that it is well crewed. So my guess is on almost every occasion when you are attacked, the proper thing to do is run. Just because you have turrets does not mean you should use them. On most ships they form a deterrent against smaller threats and will quite silently keep you out of trouble you're never aware of, but any crew that wants to attack a Connie for example, will only choose to do that if they believe they can defeat it with all turrets blazing. So in some sense, it almost does not matter who is in the turret. Fill it with friends when you can and NPCs when you can't. It's insured. . . That is so far as defense is concerned. It remains to be seen what offensive roles the NPCs are capable of. That is a whole other issue.
