I'm not saying Western countries should follow suit but they can't tolerate this laissez faire attitude of their citizens if they're serious about stopping Covid19.
I'm saying it needs to happen. We're too coddled in the US, our government needs to lock us down. There's far too many people still going out and interacting with others. Whole families going out to camping grounds (that are still open) and intermingling with people from other states. Keep those kids at home! No matter how bored they are, inform them this is a big deal. We could have just shut down the world for 2-4 weeks and be done with this, but I suspect it's going to go on for months.

Man, I don't even want to know the statistics of what the US throw out every day. We're a very wasteful country. We're still probably throwing things out even with the outbreak.
Some good news though, Disney and all the major parks around here in Florida donated all of their food stores to the local food banks when they closed.

EDIT:

Just saw this. Figured its important and a reason I'd wear goggles with my respirator if I have to go to the store.

Oh, and every silly bastard in the country buggered off down to the Sea Side because the sun was shining:

1.5 million letters sent to those most at risk telling them no to go outside for the next 12 weeks.

The truth is that the Asian countries that have handled this better are either more organized (South Korea/Japan) and/or authoritarian like Singapore. My family's from Singapore and when the Government tells you to stay indoors, that's not a friendly request, it's an order backed up by threats of legal and financial punishment. I'm not saying Western countries should follow suit but they can't tolerate this laissez faire attitude of their citizens if they're serious about stopping Covid19.
That’s the path we’re headed down here. Gov has said they asked nicely to social distance but most people (the youth) are ignoring it. There will be greater and greater restrictions placed on people if they don’t pull their heads in and do the right thing.

I give it a few more days.

Once we see 500-600 deaths per day, martial law should kick in.

I wish it would happen today.
There are things the US Govt. should be doing right now that they aren't. We've been seeing this pattern all along.

If they are waiting for things to get worse before acting, all they have to do is wait 24 hours. If they are waiting for things to get much worse, all they have to do is wait 48 hours. And if they are waiting for things to get really, really bad, then all they have to do is wait 72 hours...

I'm assuming this won't end in the US without Martial Law.
Take it for sure.

US population are more concentrated in large cities, European population are more distributed in small/medium towns and villages.

The more population density the higher infection rates.

Martial Law should be a must. In Spain the president has ordered today another 15 days period of home confinement .

McDonalds UK has announced all restaurants are closing until further notice by the end of the 23rd March.
"
Paul Pomroy, Chief Executive Officer of McDonald’s UK & Ireland said: "Over the last 24 hours, it has become clear that maintaining safe social distancing whilst operating busy takeaway and Drive Thru restaurants is increasingly difficult and therefore we have taken the decision to close every restaurant in the UK and Ireland by 7pm on Monday 23rd March at the latest.

Mr Pomroy said the decision was not taken lightly, saying the restaurants have played an important role in the community by providing free drinks to frontline health and social workers and emergency services personnel.

The statement continued: "But I have been clear throughout this that we would only continue to operate whilst it was safe for our people and together with our franchisees, we feel now is the time to make this decision to temporarily close.

It is important to note that that chart is *Deaths* only, not the number of people infected. (I'm basing the charts I make off the FT charts).

What is interesting is (as the below article points out) Germany's death rate is much lower than other countries, esp. Italy's. So far, nobody knows why, but the article discusses these points:
One likely explanation for the discrepancy in figures, Addo suggested, was that while northern Italy’s hospitals are being overrun with new patients, Germany’s are not yet at full capacity and have had more time to clear beds, stock up on equipment and redistribute personnel.

“One advantage Germany has is that we started doing professional contact tracing when the first cases were reported,” Addo said. “It bought us some time to prepare our clinics for the coming storm.”

Crucially, Germany started testing people even with milder symptoms relatively early on, meaning the total number of confirmed cases may give a more accurate picture of the virus’s spread than in other states.

According to Germany’s National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians, the country has capacity for about 12,000 Covid-19 tests per day, while Wieler has claimed it has capacity for 160,000 tests per week.
Of course, we are still early in our knowledge of the disease, and in the long run we may find out something different.

I'm just guessing here (so correct me if I'm wrong) but could it be Germany's infected are mostly healthier and younger than Italy's? I mean the affected areas in Italy are older and from my observation of Italians in general...EVERYBODY smokes!
